Best practice on replacing the Infor logo in IDM output management

I'm struggling with bad resolution when replacing the Infor logo (/MDS_File[@MDS_Name="LogoMedium"]) with a new one.

I tried to change size and resolution of the PNG files before upload to IDM, but always the same blurry result. Does anyone have any guidelines on how to prepare the PNG file for the best result?

Hi, I am also struggling with this one. Have anyone found documentation or a resolution that actually works? I tried to use the same resolution that was in the original Infor logo in an untouched environment (59x54), however this as well turns out blurry.

I spent a few hours trying to make this work with different image sizes with no positive outcome. The only workaround (and the one advised by ICS) we have is to tick the box on the image that makes it fixed size in the IDM template.

I hope to have a call with support next week on this. I've had an issue open with them for about a month so hopefully can make some progress. If I do I'll advise.

Here's the feedback i got from support:

"this is a limitation of raster images itself. Quoting some paragraphs in www.computerhope.com/.../raster.htm:

A raster image is an image file format that is defined by a pixel that has one or more numbers associated with it. The number defines the location, size, or color of the pixels. Raster images are commonly .BMP, .GIF, .JPEG, .PNG, and .TIFF files. Today, almost all of the images you see on the Internet and images taken by a digital camera are raster images.

One of the biggest disadvantages of a raster image is the inability to resize the image without getting jaggies or another type of distortion. For example, increasing the size of a small raster image will distort the image because the image editor is resizing each pixel in the image.

there is nothing you can do about distortion if you stick with the use of JPG or PNG. It is recommended to utilize SVG or Scalable Vector Graphics format. You can read more about it in www.sitepoint.com/.../.

we have attached a sample PDF to see different implementation examples of using PNG/JPG and SVG. None can beat the clarity of the SVG image. Notice in there that rescaling distorts the raster images, because when you tick “Keep image size” it looks OK.
if you have an artist that can recreate your image to a requested size it should still work with raster images. (current logo container is 72x72 pixel)

But if you don’t have such an artist that can recreate multiple versions for different sizes, here are the steps you can do to use SVG in your templates:

1. In IDM control panel >> Configuration >> MIME types, make sure to have SVG as valid extension with value = “image/svg”
2. Get your PNG/JPG and convert it to SVG using any free web tool. I used onlineconvertfree.com/.../
3. Download the SVG file.
4. Replace the file in the LogoMedium.
5. Test the templates again."

I haven't tested this yet, but this looks like it's the way forward to address the logo resizing issue.

I reviewed the mentioned utility to convert raster images to SVG and word to the wise, it doesn't work. All it does is create an SVG file with an embedded raster image in it. That will not scale with changes in screen resolution. You have to use a utility like Adobe Illustrator to Trace/Live Paint the image to convert it into vector graphics that do scale.

A true raster to SVG utility would convert the binary image code to line segment and filled regions which would look like a lot of XML code when you viewed it in a text editor. As far as I know, there is no utility, certainly not a free one, that would do that, because it is a very complex process. Usually what you do is start off with a really high resolution version of your raster image and then use a utility to make the various scaled down images. Those utilities are common. For web pages, you would create an image map that contains all the different sized images and use JavaScript to display the correct one based on the current display boundaries.

There really is no replacement for having an original vector-based version of your images. A raster version of a logo is usually an indication that the image was scraped from a webpage or other source and not an officially distributed company intellectual property (IP) product. Companies are usually very protective of who can utilize and display logos for various reasons.
