GTIN 'project'

Hello

I'm in IT and don't know a lot about GTIN's. I do know we are not yet on Infor Supply Chain but hope to start that project next year. One of the 'prep' steps our Materials Dept would like to do is get GTIN's ready now so we can begin utilizing that 'benefit' of having gtin.. such as lot, serial #, expiration, etc. by just scanning the packaging bar code.

This seems like a huge undertaking and wondering if any of have done this and if so, if you have any tips/resources that can help in gathering all this data.

GTIN, or Global Transaction Item Number, is basically a unique number assigned to every packaging level of a product (a case has a different GTIN than a box, which has a different GTIN than the each, etc.)

Your Materials Department should have some resources to obtain those GTIN's (your group purchasing organization would be a good start). You can also search the Internet for ACCESSGUDID - it's a database maintained by the FDA, that can be downloaded.

A lot would depend on the system you have now, and whether or not it has the ability to store/use that information. Additionally, scanning is really useful "at the bedside", so another issue is whether or not your current system ca interface the GTIN to the downstream system(s).

Yes - SCM needs to understand that the GTINs in Lawson are manually entered - there is no internal database for them. Everytime they add an item or change a UOM on an existing item, they will need to lookup the corrected GTIN and maintain on the Item Master.

GUID is the best place we've found for them, but I haven't seen any kind of bulk download or update interface. It's pull as you go.

The GUIDs download in xml format. A couple other places have been trying to find some decent xml to excel program. Please share if you find one!

Hello!

We are currently using GTIN for our point of use system (Omnicell AKA BCX) so that our caregivers at the bedside can just scan the supply package when they use something. One thing to note is that the GTIN on most medical supplies is in this format: (01)14DigitGTIN(21)SerialNumber(10)LotNumber. Sometimes it only has the serial number and sometimes it only has the lot number, sometimes it may also have an expiration date on the end.

Here is the process I went through to enable the use of the GTIN:

1) Retrieve GTIN information from our GPO

2) Load GTIN into Lawson using add-ins

3) Add GTIN field into IPA flow that creates outbound file to BCX (strip the parentheses)

4) Modify BCX interface to accept GTIN string, and only take the first 16 characters to ensure it is always unique.

5) Create SQL stored procedure to move the GTIN values into the cross-reference table in BCX

6) Program scanners to read only the first 16 characters of a scanned barcode
