naming conventions for Par/Inventory/Requesting locations

Since we are in a position to redo and create new Par/Inventory/Requesting locations, I was looking for feedback on what naming conventions you use. We'd like to keep them general enough to work over time as things change, like room locations and the like.

We are moving to Cloudsuite and will have more character space for these fields, so include your wish list on naming conventions if you had more space.

Our centrals tend to be one character so our naming convention is FromLocPar RICU is Regional ICU. So they "make sense" when you have to deal with a listing. We likely wouldn't do too much with extra space - RORAN is Regional OR Anesthesia - we'd just make Anesthesia longer.

We currently use the convention below:

RQ01 for Par loc - T05P1 - for Tower building, 5th floor, par wall 1.

IC02 for T05P1 is T5345 - Simply the room number for the Tower par location.

All our inventory locations have a WH prefix with an alpha or numeric suffix.

Requesting locations we stay with a generic build indicator 2 alpha character prefix and 3 digit suffix. We call it a "nonsense" location code. That gives us at least 999 location codes per building if we stick to the 3 digit suffix. We put the room and department name in the R_NAME field since we have 30 characters to play with.

We would love to be able to the room numbers in full as the location code on both RQ01 and IC02. Some of our room numbers are 9 characters.

Oh I'd missed this was for replenishment locs as well! How big does the field get? We'd likely do dock-AU combos.

If a dept moves to a different location then do you create all new codes for the room specific ones? We'd like to avoid that kind of rework.

We avoid room numbers in the naming for that reason. we put that type of thing in Address 2 so it will print on receiving documents or pick tickets.

If it moves to a different physical address all together, yes, we give it a new req loc or split the AU between two as indicated.

We have a location built for every room already. If a department moves, they submit a move request with their new building/floor/room. We then make that update on the RQ04 for them.
