Step and grade

My organization would like to start using step and grade for some of our employees. I have read through the documentation and I do not see anywhere in the documents that explains how an employee moves through the steps. Would anyone be able to explain the process of how it works? We are S3 v10.

There is really no built in automation for step and grade as delivered in V10. Once you assign employees to the desired step and grade on the S&G schedule, movement through the grades would occur as you change their step assignments using a personnel action or directly on HR11. One thing you will learn is that the current pay rates for step and grade employees are not held on the EMPLOYEE table. So if you have any reporting for pay rates based on the EMPLOYEE table, you would have to modify them look to the current value on the PAYRATE table instead.

We have one facility using S&G and they increase everyone's step on January 1. The positions hold the S&G schedule, but we don't assign the step to the position - we do that at hire. We have employee groups for each step, and before the first payroll of the year, I use a mass action PA52.3 to move people from one group to the next, and that updates the HR11. I have another entity looking to use S&G and we're considering putting the step directly onto the position, and as people progress in their skills to move to the next step, we'll accomplish that through a job change PA. Everything is manual and you handle the step increase according to what your steps mean.

Thanks for the quick reply. We plan to use seniority date and job code to determine which grade and step to assign to an employee and employees would move on their anniversary date so we would need to run this weekly. Do you or anyone else foresee any issues in what we plan to do?
