Getting really poor performance on Window 10 PCs after moving to a Windows 2019 server yesterday

Hi all,

Just migrated a customers Opera3 onto a new "On-Premise" Windows 2019 HV-Server which has a File Server to host the Opera3 and a virtual RDS server (Opera version is 2.70)

All PCs where replaced with Windows 10 PC's built to release 1903, build 18362 and have 12GB ram each. There is NO anti-virus deployed as yet.

The Opera3 performance on the Windows 10 PC's is really really poor - getting a black screen and not responding when trying to do stock search and general processing is just lagging however on the RDS server it returns the search immediately and is really nippy.

I applied the 3 registry changes to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetservicesLanmanWorkstationParameters which Microsoft advises to do for VFP but this did not make any difference and also turned off the local firewall but again made no difference.

Has anybody else came across this?

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Clare, we had EXACTLy the same issue on one of our client sites. they had upgraded their server from SBS 2011 to WIn 2019 & it slowed everything down. Their IT are really good & fixed it with the following:

I have resolved this issue after much troubleshooting.

As observed, the issue was only affecting Windows 7/Server 2008 level machines. That led me on a merry chase to nowhere checking and eliminating various things.

LAN speed tests to the new opera server were showing as really good write speed but terrible read speed, something like 800Mbps/80Mbps.

I eventually identified that the root cause was related to the default Virtual Switch configuration on the HyperV host server.

Specifically, disabling a feature that defaulted to ON fixed it. Instantly. Speeds are very good now, something like 800Mbps/900Mbps.

For your own info, should you come across this again, I had to disable “RSC” in the vSwitch as described in this Microsoft KB https://docs.microsoft.com/sl-si/windows-server/networking/technologies/hpn/rsc-in-the-vswitch?view=vsts

Hi Claire,

We have found that the 3 registry changes cause significant performance issues, you may want to consider removing these whilst you are trying to find the cause of the performance issues.

I would undo those workstation registry changes first of all, on a couple of workstations initially. IMO they should only be applied in cases where Microsoft changes something in the SMB protocol in a release and it can be seen to be causing data corruption. This has happened a few times over the years, most recently with Windows 10 1809. As far as I know they sorted it out in later Windows 10 releases and it doesn't happen in all cases anyway.

Thanks Jodie and not sure if you can also see Alan's reply - I never realised that the problem was just related to a certain build so will undo this on the PCs as matter of urgency.

Just wanted to let you know the solution also worked for our customer so a huge thank you for taking the time out to reply and share, very much appreciated.

Just on the off chance, have you come across any sites whereby the Opera3 performance on a 2016 rds server which is hosted by a 2016 file server in the cloud be horrendous - similar to the performance issues found in the 2019? Our engineering department have struggled to deploy this and have had to either host Opera3 on just the RDS server or revert back to a 2012r2 environment.
