BSI Tomcat and Java Update - Uninstall First?

Greetings,

We have a server dedicated to running Tomcat and the BSI Client. We have Tomcat 7.0 and Java 1.7 installed.

Is it best to uninstall these versions first before installing the newer versions? I've taken screenshots of the current configuration screens, but it's been years since these were installed and I would prefer to avoid shooting myself in the foot.

I assume some folks have completed this already, did you back up any configuration files for the new Tomcat version, or was it just a "from scratch" install?

My server is a VM, so I am having our IT department take a snapshot for me in case things go south. The Database is on it's own SQL server so I don't think it is in danger.

Any tips would be much appreciated

if your goal is to update to JDK8 and newer Tomcat, it's easier and faster to deinstall things and install the new ones (vs doing proper Tomcat version upgrade/JDK switch). Note that all configuration/connectivity items will need to be retyped, so you have to capture them first.

If your goal is to do BSI version/cyclic update, you do not need to touch Tomcat or Java.

Since your intention is to upgrade Java & Tomcat, it would be easiest to perform the upgrade of these components the next time that you upgrade BSI.

We have not noticed a big difference if you uninstall/install vs run the upgrade of Tomcat & Java. How you update BSI is more important.

Reason: To connect BSI to the updated Java & Tomcat, you essentially run the BSI install scripts and perform the uninstall then reinstall of BSI.

Snapshots are always good.
