There was a discussion a couple years back, but that related to UPC or other barcodes.
Yes, I understand that GTIN is just an extension of UPC, but my concern is more around the field identifiers, and if anyone has had success in using a handheld scanner (like when Surgery processes bill-only requests), where the product is scanned into a requisition, perhaps also adding lot/serial numbers?
The handheld scanners in our organization, function as just another input device (converting what's scanned into characters entered as if someone was typing). But barcodes may (or may not) have segment identifiers (01-GTIN, 17-expiration date, 10-batch #, 21-serial #). These scan just fine if using a smart device (Andoid handhelds), but those are expense.
Our thought is that the handheld scanner might need (or come-with) software that performs the additional processing, so looking to see if anyone has had any success with this?
GS1 has a downloadable PowerPoint explaining much of this
