Code3of9 works good. make sure you install the font on the computer too.
we use motorola 7535G2.

would it be code39One or code39Two? how about font size? all font 39's are install on the kiosks.

I am not sure that the differences between the Code39 versions is much to worry about (unless you are trying to use the expanded ASCII which can get hairy).
Our WO QRP shows that the widths are set as "Dynamic" and the font size is set to 14. The font is specified as "Code39OneRedA."
We have a wide variety of barcode scanners. The majority are whatever was cheapest, USB or PS2 model available when we needed to buy them. We also have some Motorola MC9090s. No issues with barcode reading.

font size doesnt matter too much. code39two is what i have everything set to here.

We also use a few different types of barcode scanners with Code39 font (usually greater than 20pt, but we've done smaller).
Do you have the sentinel character set? We have to use a * on custom reports and barcodes we added to qrps. Without it, the barcodes won't scan.

Code39two. I have 28 for font size on the traveler. The programming of the gun is important. I have also had to add characters at the beginning and the end. ie.
="*" & Fields!WONUM_ID.Value & "*" This is what it looks like from Reporting Services. If you need to use a mix of characters I have down loaded Free3of9 to get additional ascii characters. Again you need to program the gun to accept the font.

There are two basic types of scanners. digital and laser. Laser a uses a mirror and a laser to scan the code. In our environment it is far superior to digital, due to dirt and grime. By superior I mean it scans successfully more readily. Digital uses a light and a camera. The image must be clean and straight on. Digital has the advantage of decoding 2d barcodes and such, but we only use straight code39.
I recommend laser. We us Symbol LS2208 with great success.
At one point someone set barcode font to bold to try and get better reads with darker font. This actually made it worse. There should be clean crisp white and black spaces of different widths for it to work. Laser is better than inkjet as well although both work.

last line to clarify laser printer better than ink jet
