Windows 7 Fax and Scan Unreadable Faxes

Looking for suggestions on fixing a nagging problem. On a random basis a vendor will report receiving a PO that is partially or completely unreadable. More specifically, they will get lines where the top, middle or bottom is missing. For you old timers like me, it resembles a line feed problem on a dot matrix printer. Other times, entire sections of the PO is missing.

I have verified the PDF files are created properly by Fax Integrator 9.0.1 and are passed successfully to Windows 7 Fax and Scan.

It sure seems beyond our control, but of course our vendors are adamant we are the only customers experiencing this.

Rather than faxing, can you send as an email (with PDF Attachment)?

I just retired our Lawson Fax Integrator June 1st, we are now using RightFax to send all our Lawson Faxes. We pick the files up off the UNIX Lawson folder where Lawson Fax Integrator would normally pick them up. We convert that file to a PDF file and email it to our RightFax server. RightFax faxes the PDF to the Vendor and emails us a success or failure message, the reply from RightFax has an image file of the first page as a reference to the PO that was sent.

We used ActiveBatch to retrieve the Unix text file and saves it to PDF but any scripting language would work. I know the trick was to use courier font to get the data to align on the Fax Form properly.

No more dedicated PC and modem to deal with and now using the hospitals networked faxing system. We had an old XP machine doing the Lawson Faxing and needed to retire it.

In the next few weeks we are going to create an SSRS web report of the outbound faxes so RightFax will only email us Failed attempts so we can manually fax them. The report will give procurement a report they can reference to look up faxed PO dates and times on request.

To your original question, we have seen problems similar to what you are seeing but I believe it was emailing via GHX not with sending faxes. The person who would know the particulars of that is currently on vacation.

My understanding is that it is due to the inability to load fax drivers on the server. We have had the same issue. As we move to Infor 10, here is the assessment from my IT Lead as to our status:

The 9.x application version is not forward compatible with Infor 10 and must be upgraded to version 10.0.x. Currently the application is running on a physical Windows 2003 server, which goes out of support from Microsoft on July 14th of this year. Version 10 of Fax Integrator is compatible with LSF 9.0.1 and can be upgraded before the upgrade to Infor 10. With Windows 2003 no longer being supported, the OS needs to be upgraded or according to the Infor Compatibility Matrix, Fax Integrator can be run on a Windows 7 or Windows 8 PC. There was discussion in the past of moving Fax Integrator to a PC in an office using a USB fax/modem. Should this application be moved to the Windows 7 PC or do we need to purchase a new Windows server with a fax card to run the latest version?

We do email some vendors, but not all. I don't like to use email when the address is not a group mailbox. Thanks for you post CGaware.

I have researched the RightFax option in the past and it was a $20k to $25k investment to integrate with our system. Evidently overlays are needed to read our fax files and then the FCL codes are applied before RightFax processes them. Greg - Is this your experience and do you find these ballpark numbers to be reasonable?

We first thought we needed to purchase the " Rightfax Integration module" which is in the price range your talking about so I assume that is what you were quoted on. I also looked at MHC Document Express but that also was in the $20K range as well. The Doc Express Module does a lot of other things with formatting documents and we really didn't need all that capability.

However we discovered we have the capability to send emails to our RightFax server with our standard enterprise system. You can simply attach one or more PO's as PDF file attachments to the email and right fax will Fax each one to the Vendor fax number provided. Ours is setup so you email @fax.blahblah.org and RightFax will use the as entered in front of the @ symbol and send the attachments to that number. It will also send emails back to a DL with sent statuses.

There was a bit of work for the scripting language to sort out multiple PO's in the Lawson file and separate them if they were going to different Vendors, but it wasn't to bad. The Lawson file is just a Text file, so you have to collect the Fax information from the top of the file for the "send to" number and remove it and save the body of the fax file as a PDF ( the portion that Lawson Fax Integrator sends) . We had the scripting part stood up in a few days or effort probably. Seemed that formatting took the longest but turned out to be as simple as using courier font setting to maintain the alignment of the text.

Hope this helps, let me know if you have any additional questions. If you already have RightFax in house, I think the proper solution is to utilize that as your faxing solution.

INFOR should add RightFax type of capability in 10.x as that is becoming the faxing standard.

We did a similar process, but didn't have RightFax inhouse. The programming (scripting) handled both the fax & email outputs coming out of the PO system. We used a SaaS faxing service in the cloud called GFI that was very cost effective as a 'per page' solution. It has good dashboarding to track usage statistics and a notification engine for success/failures and subscription renewal.

While we use Fax Integrator, we also utilize a multi-line fax server (Biscom's FAXCOM) to handle the actual faxing. It works in a similar method: @faxserver.

Content can be either a document (pdf), RTF, text, etc...

works well.

@MKirch did you ever find a resolution for this? We are experiencing a similar issue. Appears to be at random and not consistent for each fax.

Hi, my name is Lori and I am the Admin that works with MKirch, and we were able to resolve the issue. We just uninstalled and re-installed the Windows Fax and Scan service. Since we did that we have not seen any more issues.
