Create an eye-catching alert on the main menu.

I have a client who would like a blinking red message to appear on the main menu when there are unread messages. (The green message icon is not enough). I tried using the screen_mod$ variable via SMC500, but any mnemonics I add to it get stripped.

Is there a way of displaying an eye-catching message on the main menu?
