Document Reference - Setup Fields

I am looking for some direction on setting up the document reference system in visual.
I understand the Stage and Revision fields but I would like some input on the Reference Type and Document Category.
Does anyone have any suggestions for using these and how they are used in the system.

Can't help you we are not using that at the moment and are deep in a 6.5.4 upgrade - debugging mode from our move from 6.1.3 on Jan 16.
