DBGET vs DBGETC

Hello,

I am using office plus to retrieve data and create reports. I read through the manual and I still have a hard time understanding why DBGETC is preferred to DBGET. In my experience DBGETC does not always import the data reliably, while DBGET does. Funilly, DBGETC.FIRST is also more reliable that DBGETC.

I would love to better understand the difference between those commands, if someone would be willing to help me out.

Hello Valentin,

the main difference is in performance. The DBGETC is done in batch. To explain in a bit simplified way, when you use these formulas, the calculation is done in 2 steps, in first step we collect all DBGETC formulas, cluster them, create appropriate request and send it to OLAP and in second step we retrieve these values. On the other hand, DBGET is calculated immediately and is sending single request to the OLAP database.

So when you have lot of formulas, you will send many requests to the database and you will see huge performance difference between DBGETC compared to DBGET formulas.

thank you very much for your reply. It definately does help. My main problem with DBGETC is that when I use application.calculate in a VBA macro it does not wait until all the calculations are done, while with DBGET is does.

Another problem is that DBGETC does sometimes return different (wrong) values compared to DBGET.

Any idea what I can do to solve these problems?

Hello again,

when you use VBA for calculation you need to be very careful with the Formula Engine in O+. O+ is hooked on many excel events and sometimes does really complex stuff in the background to support various features.

In case of clustered formulas like DBGETC or CELL.GETC it is not good idea to trigger the calculation like that cause the 2 steps in fact mean 2 calculation rounds. That is most probably why you have issues.

As for retrieving different values - what exactly do you mean? That single DBGET returns correct value but single DBGETC returns incorrect one? Or do you speak about case when you have many DBGET vs many DBGETC formulas? And is it related to the VBA or even without using VBA?

Update: can you also describe what use case are you trying to cover with VBA?

Thank you Vit. So I won't use DBGETC in VBA then. Pity!

What I mean with different values is that I tried the DBGET and DBGETC with the exact same parameters and in some instances DBGETC returned the wrong values while DBGET returned the correct values. Even with no VBA.
