Effects of upgrading to Portal 10.1 and EMSS 10.00.08 on user experience and browser support

Recently, we upgraded from Ming.le to Infor OS and updated Portal from 10.09 to 10.1 at the same time on our internal webserver.

We also have an external webserver that services all our EMSS users and because this is highly visible chose not to update that Portal instance yet.

Our EMSS version is 10.00.07 however I understand that 10.00.08 supports a revised skin so we were thinking of updating this and Portal at once.

There are concerns about changes disrupting our large user base however so we're trying to approach this with an appropriate degree of caution.

When we first started on Portal 10.09 and EMSS 10.00.07 about 5 years ago, Infor had built in hard coded stops to prevent connections from anything other than IE.

We found this shortsighted, even at that time since many users were already leveraging mobile devices so had a Lawson services partner modify our EMSS code to work with Chrome, Safari and Android browser connections.

This has worked great for quite some time however I assume the new version of Portal and EMSS will undo all of those efforts and we do not want to take a step backward.

Can anyone comment on observations with browser / device support as well as "end user experience" after updating Portal and EMSS to the current releases?

Hi - good morning! I wanted to try and clarify one thing from the Infor side. I spoke to our Development team and they were a bit surprised by this comment in your post. Their comments are below:

This is a bit surprising since we have been supporting Google Chrome for many years now. We currently support Chrome, Edge Chromium, FF and Safari for Portal 10.1.x.
With regards to EMSS the 10.0.8.0 which they are planning to implement - that is supported only on Chrome and Edge Chromium as documented in the Release matrix. With regards to FF and Safari it seems there are some nuances involved looking at the matrix so we will circle back and research further.
We have not supported browser connections coming from devices such as Android & iPhone and no change there. If they had done customizations in earlier versions to remove our checks, then they will have to redo it as part of any update.

We have been running EMSS for about 20 years and made ours available externally right before Chrome was allowed but I agree that desktop browser support is much improved over the last few years..

The main concern was the built in personality checks which were a hard stop and while Chrome may no longer fall into this category, connections from Android and IOS still do from what I'm told.

I assume Infor's decision to continue blocking mobile stems from the arduous task of trying to support those connections.

We understand as with our current modified code that there would be no warranty but it might be helpful if Infor provided workaround steps since no fully function mobile version exists. (We did evaluate at mobile employee about 6 years ago and found it extremely limited and cumbersome to manage.)

In 2021, I don't believe that EMSS users looking to connect from their cell phones is an unreasonable expectation.

If there are any end users out there who have had success in making modifications, or would like to share their look and feel experiences when moving EMSS from Portal 10.09 to 10.1 we would like to hear about it.
