Application Studio: Color Code Elements in a Hyperblock

Hi All,

I have a tabular report in Application Studio (Version 11) which contains multiple Hyperblocks and the user is able to expand the Hyperblocks up to the lowest level.

I want to know if there is a way where I can do a conditional formatting of shading the cells in separate colors, for each level of expansion.

I'm facing trouble with this requirement as I can't use the Level Number Attribute as my flag for the color codes, as the starting level of elements different. If you have a look at the image below there are two tables which show the elements that are populated in one Hyperblock. As you can see the Level Number for the first record in both tables are different (Level 6 & Level 7). If I use the Level Number attribute to define my conditional formatting, the 2nd element in both my tables will be highlighted in two different colors even though the expansion level is the same (Expansion Level is 2).

There is no attribute that stores the expansion level number. Is there a way I can define the conditional formatting logics to color code the cells, based on the Expansion Level so that the color coding will be consistent.

The color coding outcome I am expecting is show in the image below.

Would really appreciate some suggestions.

Have you tried de.level? If that comes out OK you can set up the conditional formatting based on that.

Hi Amritha,

The formula "Getlevel" could also help here.

There is also a way to stick level formatting to hyperblock levels. This is from my documentation when I had this topic in the past. Maybe it helps:

To create a style for each hyperblock level:

Create a hyperblock and select Format > Style
The Edit Styles dialog is displayed.
Note: The Style option is disabled if the hyperblock is currently selected. Click anywhere outside the hyperblock to deselect it.
Specify a style name, ending in a number which represents the level of the hierarchy. For example, Level1.
To specify a style name, overwrite the currently displayed style name.
Click Add.
Click Change and define the style.
Add the style name for each level of the hierarchy, using a different number at the end of each (for example, Level2, Level3 and Level4). Specify a format for each level.
To assign the style to the key output cell, go to the Hyperblock "Output Properties" ("Editing hyperblock output properties") dialog and select it in the Fill style list.
Note: In the Fill style list, the name of the style does not display the final, numeric character.
In View Mode, each level of the hierarchy has a different format. But, only the elements displayed in the Key Output cell are formatted. The values displayed in the Value cell are not formatted. The Fill Style option is not available in the Hyperblock Output Properties dialog of value cells. Instead, to assign level-specific formats to the value cell of a hyperblock use the GETLEVEL function in a conditional format.

You could also try to determine the min level being displayed and use conditional formatting based on the difference between the minimum level and the level of each row.

if you have ragged hierarchies, it can be quite difficult to get consistent colour coding. 2 suggestions:

Try checking the number of decendants - this will indicate if its a base level or not (as the no of decendants of base level members will be 0)

or you could also add an attribute for colour coding and then do conditional formatting off this.

While using the GETLEVEL Function for this requirement I noticed that if a particular Hyperblock contains elements which start at various levels, that the GETLEVEL Function value differs as well. Have you encountered this?

For an example lets say I have a GL Account Hyperblock, which shows elements including parent for three items. The three elements with their starting element level is shown below.

GL Account 1 - Level 6

GL Account - Level 5

GL Account - Level 4

In the above instance, the GETLEVEL Function returns three different values for the 3 items above.

Let me know if you have come across this scenario and if there is a possible work around.
