How to set up a benefit plan with coverage amounts, age rate table and coverage options?

We're setting up a new critical illness plan where the employee can choose the amount of coverage, has coverage options (employee only, employee + spouse, family) and uses an age rate table.

Has anyone else set up a plan in Lawson with these 3 components? We haven't found a combination of flags that will provide all 3 of these.

We had to setup 3 separate critical illness benefit plans for the different amounts of coverage ($5K, $10K and $15K), but also utilize coverage options and age rate tables. Not sure if this is the only way to do this type of setup, but it's what has worked for us so far.

I think this is your only option...to break the plan setup down like you have. There is not a benefit plan type in Lawson that will accommodate all three requirements (coverage option, coverage amounts, and age rate table). Until 2019, we offered a long term care plan that had a similar structure - different coverage amounts, age table, and different options. We did the calculations outside the system and put the final contribution as an annual amount as a contribution. I am curious to know how do the three plans harmonize for a single employee deduction?

That is what I am trying to figure out. The carrier is only giving us one rate for each level (10k, 20k, 30k) but employee can choose to add spouses/kids and need to attach them to the plan. So the spouse/kids are essentially free if the employee buys it for themselves. The carrier is looking at other clients who have Lawson to see if they can provide some guidance on setup.

For what it's worth - I built 4 plans as well with Coverage Amounts/Salary or Coverage Rate Table. One plan in EL for Employee Only, and 3 plans in DL for EE+Spouse, EE+Child(ren), Family. I couldn't figure out any other way to do it since it is age based and coverage amount based. It's been working fine since we built it in 2019.

This is how we ended up setting this up:

Employees can choose one of 3 coverage amounts; they can cover themselves, themselves + spouse, themselves + children or family and premiums are based on age and whether or not they use tobacco

We set up two plan - tobacco user and non-tobacco user

The plan Coverage Type is Coverage Options and the Contribution Type is Options Amount Range (2).

The coverage options include a combination of coverage amount and who is covered - each plan has 12 options since there are 3 coverage amounts and 4 choices for who is covered.

The premiums are then set up with an Age Rate Table

Annual enrollment has them first select between the two plans and then the option (combination of coverage amount & who is covered).

Hi, Carla,

How were you able to set up premiums with an Age Rate Table if the plan set up is with options amounts? I have found I could only add Age Rate Tables to plans with coverage amounts (no options).

On BN15 under Parameters we set the Contribution Type to Options Amount Range. This gave us access to BN17 to set up Options and BN19.2 to attach an Age Rate Table to each option.
