Add-ins query with "OR" criteria times out when querying 9.0.1
maria-asencio
We are upgrading to 9.0.1 this weekend and during testing have run across several queries we use on a regular basis where we have "OR" criteria. There's a fairly simple one that is just pulling 3 fields from APINVOICE and the criteria is: {invoice1} OR {invoice2}. When we query on 9.0.0, that takes less than 2 seconds. Running the same query against 9.0.1, even after rebuilding it, it takes over a minute. We are using version 9.0.3.1601 of add-ins.
Anyone have a solution for this?

Change your timeout with the yellow/green arrows icon in the UI to 999 and go get a cup of coffee.

Make sure you make use of the index option. MS Add-in queries run much more efficiently if you use the index option. There are 14 different index options available but Company seems to be a theme.

I have changed the timeout to 500 seconds, and still have some queries that will not generate in that window. We also use the indexes for large queries, and that has always helped. But this particular one is only pulling 3 fields and I'm only trying to get the information for 2 invoices. Why would it matter which version of Lawson it is querying? 2 seconds vs 90 seconds seems unreasonable to me to pull the exact same data.

We did see some performance hits when we upgraded from 8.1 to 9.0.1 last year (March 2012) and even more after the ESP/MSP upgrade in May 2012. We use indexes even for small queries that go against big files. If you have not done an archive/purge and have been on Lawson a long time, that might be causing the long run time. We are using a mix of reporting options because of long run times and concerns about system performance in a 24/7 environment. Have you tried just using Lawson AP9x online analysis screens and drilling to get the information? If you have Crystal reporting, we have found that to be faster than add-ins but the table joins are not done for you so you have to know your tables and fields.

Yes, it's not an issue of finding the information, it's pulling data into a report and Crystal is not an option. I'm going to file an incident with Lawson and see if they know why this is happening. Thanks for sharing!

Good luckl! If they say anything other than working as designed, enter an enhancement request or upgrade to 10, please let us know.

Will do! Someone else said they filed an incident for the same thing and got responses like "don't specify any criteria" and "don't use OR" - neither of which are helpful, so here's hoping I get something useful!

I am glad to see that you decided to open an incident. From what I understand from our Technology Group, there was at some point an issue with filtering in 9.0.1 so it is possible there is a patch to fix what you are seeing.
I also very much agree with what BPries mentioned about the efficiencies of the indexes. I recommend them whenever possible - even for smaller queries. I also found it more convenient to key my criteria in the index instead of adding individual criteria lines.
Just a hint to anyone that may not know this about entering criteria in the index area (using the above scenario as an example)....
To search for multiple transactions, just separate with a semicolon but no space: 12345;12346;12347
To search for a range, draw an arrow: 12345->12347

I hope there is a patch. We are just beginning our annual ESP/MSP upgrade project and hopefully, if there is one, it would be included in our download. I would be interested in what the final resolution is for you Laura.

Update: I filed an incident for this issue. The tech was able to replicate my results and submitted JT-463289. I heard a rumor that the developer has isolated what changed and what is happening, and that the JT should be out in a few weeks. Fingers crossed.....

I am glad they are looking at it. Not sure if we will download as soon as it is released or not as we have shifted the majority of our add-ins to Crystal, but I will put it on the list to watch for. Thank you for the update!
