Variable won't stay when new line is added on Customer Order Line

I have a variable that I pass from Customer Orders to Customer Order Lines.  I then show it in a component on the Customer Order Lines form.  The first line this works without any issues but when I add a new line, then variable no longer retains the value.  Does anyone know how to fix this?

My work around was to populate an unbound hidden textbox on a form event then use that value.
