Menu Version 2 - Icons and Preferences

We've gotten some feedback about control over which of the menu icons (e.g. Notifications, Inbasket, Print Files, Jobs...) should be shown on them menu and which should be behind the ellipses (three dots) overflow menu.

To date, we've decided to show Notifications, Inbasket, Print Files as the icons that are on the menu. We feel these are mostly ubiquities and most used by most users. Of course they will only display to users if you have allowed them to show of course. However, you cannot say that Jobs or Actions should show up rather than Inbasket.

So, the key question to us is: who feels they need what level control over these and why? If control is needed, would it only be and end-user preference or setting?

We've implemented these configs in our Production system (in conjunction with Candidate Experience) and have not had any negative feedback. It's a cleaner look overall and the icons Infor's chosen to expose by default work for our staff. We have had no requests to expose more options outside of the ellipsis.

Personal opinion is the current format that I'm seeing is easier.

Using the ellipses to navigate with means one more click - which is something we are trying to reduce.

When menus are changed, it also requires updates to all training materials to note the revised navigation.

Is there a functional/operational benefit to what is being proposed, or is this purely cosmetic?

Yes, we went after several functional and design/ux benefits:

That icon design is both hard to use (which is what? always have to hover and wait for tooltip to know) and it doesn't scale. E.g. we need to add 1,2,3+ more icons. Current design breaks even more.

We've added more ability to hide/show all elements on a menu now, so the design needed to be flexible and elastic. Today it's very rigid.

Moving the stuff at the bottom of the menu (About, Sign out, Help, Settings) to the More menu up top reduces scanning for that stuff and/or scrolling all the time to get to it.

We think it's more natural to click on the web application you are current viewing in-line (vs. top-right) in order to switch to other ones. The view you get of other available web applications should be cleaner and easier to use.

Overall, this new design gives room for growth into the coming years and will have less visual overt changes over that time.

Try to use the new menu for a couple of weeks and circle back? Hey, "Who moved my Cheese?"

I forgot to ask on "Using the ellipses to navigate with means one more click - which is something we are trying to reduce."

What do you see in that More ellipses menu that is "high-touch" enough for some or all users to warrant "one more click" as a productivity concern? We did put have Notifications, Inbasket and Print Files all up front for this reason.

Fair points ... not intending to sound unwilling to change, actually quite the opposite - generally embrace and pursue it, but want to be aware that sometimes a lot of little changes from an end user perspective add up to a big change. With over 45k associates, many little changes can have a big ripple.

Was wanting to understand and identify the benefit of what is being asked (which you've spoken to), also adding a voice to question whether the change is being made for the purpose of change - understanding what the relative and expected value is.

Regarding the one more click, would be My Actions and My Reports. I don't know that the volume is high enough to be of consequence or not honestly. Only making the statement that the reduction of clicks is beneficial where otherwise avoidable (I.e. toggling the search bar on/off).

Right now, the only icons we show are four: My Print Files, My Notifications, My Reports, and My Actions. So, for us using the new option without the ability to add/remove from this list could cause some confusion and does create more clicks. Ultimately, the perspective could be 'where did half of the buttons go?'

As an aside, I would appreciate another user showing me their instance and how My Notifications is valuable...honestly as a user I never look at this, have never needed to, and there's just this constant red dot!

I use My Notifications a lot, but only because it's what I'm used to. I would agree that there isn't anything in there that I've seen uniquely useful as compared to My Print Files.

I can see where a personalization was shared with me, the My Notifications documents that "someone" shared a personalization, but it doesn't indicate who, so still of little use other than knowing it has occurred. Could likely add a field to make that more meaningful, but functionally or operationally, it doesn't impact anything that I can identify.

If a larger question is needing to be answered, I can certainly inquire with my counterparts to see if provides any added benefit to them. I agree with Jacob that I don't know what value it is other than the red dot to identify I have something new, that is 99% of the time also in print files.

So you don't use My Inbasket for approvals then? Do you get to those through My Notifications then or do you not use Inbasket at all and use Inbox instead?

We do not use My Inbasket for approvals. We use what we refer to as the consolidated inbox in the top right-hand corner...looks like an envelope.

That's a great point! I don't have a lot of approvals that come through in my role, but that is where they generate to. Our approvals route to an email with buttons at the bottom of the email to allow a user to manage the approval without signing into the system.

It's related, but worth separating. Also I have additional questions about mobile approvals, mobile push notifications to devices and Infor Go as well coming up.

I am too. Some concern here this is "a big change" and how to roll it out at default GA. Do you think this is v1 to v2 is a big change? Especially with the "hey something's new Guides" we added.
