FACTS in VMWare environment
salbritton
Has anybody installed FACTS in a VMWare environment (as opposed to Terminal Services or Citrix)? Any problems, gotchas, etc.? Any input regarding your experience is appreciated.

We do not have any live systems running VMWare yet, but we have played with it. We have a server running VMWare. We created another virtual server and loaded red hat Linux. We then installed FACTS on that virtual red hat server and played with it for several months. Once red hat was installed on the virtual machine, I could not tell that I was not using a stand along red hat server. Everything worked as expected. We did these tests with FACTS 7.5. Our tests did not simulate a system with hundreds (or even tens) of users, but I believe it would just be a matter of allocating enough resources to the virtual machine.

We have a customer that just moved their systems to RackSpace. They are using a 64-bit hardware server which is running vmware. They have a 32-bit RedHat Linux VM running FACTS and a 64-bit Windows Terminal server providing user access/windx. They have two vpn legs to two different states through which the user's connect to the terminal server. Some direct windx connections are made from a few internal systems. Around 20 users. FACTS 7.5. They have been using this configuration for well over a month now and have had no issues related to FACTS running on the VMware system. I would recommend a 64-bit server with plenty of RAM and hard drive space as well as at least one multicore processor if not two... depending on your needs. In case you're wondering, my experience with RackSpace has been exceptional.
