WHAT SHOULD YOU HAVE IN THE START IN BOX IN THE VISUAL PROGRAM SHORTCUT?

We are having huge problems with unwanted log files and copies of documents landing in local configuration files and in the program folder on our server. This is to do with what folder appears in the 'Start In' box in the properties of the shortcut.

If I set it to my local configuration folder (ie where all the ini files are), copies of all the documents I drag into the windows (like customer orders) and scheduler log files land in there. If I set it to the directory in which the program files are stored on our server, all these documents and logs land in among all the program executables. I think this all started when we upgraded to version 9.0.8 because these rogue files date back to autumn 2020 and I never saw all this clutter previously in these folders.

Can anyone tell me what we are supposed to put in the 'start in ' folder on the client only work stations?

Can anyone tell me where all these scheduler log files are supposed to go?

Can anyone tell me why I am getting an extra copy (I get the copy I expect in my nominated document folder as well) of each document I drag in and why it is going in my 'Start In' folder?

I'm not getting any answers from support.

We're on ver.10 and all these files are filling up our folders as well. The Logs will write to the folder specified, which was normally fine... until Infor went crazy and added tons of extra logs. For example: every time the Concurrent Scheduler module is opened (doesn't even need to be run) there's another log. I reported it thinking the developers mistakenly left them in the release version... apparently not the case, and I'm not sure what their thinking is.

I'm hoping they trim these things down, and perhaps allow better control of where the log files are saved and how long they are kept.

Hello,

we normally do client installs, and share the EXEs off the server, so the 'Target' is the server folder with VM.exe, and the 'Start In' is a local folder on the PC.

This is how Synergy Resources does all our customer installations.

We run full client installs on Azure Virtual Desktops (databases in Azure SQL instance). Use powershell on the shortcut to set registry entries to point local directory to OneDrive, so everyone has their person config files in a folder in their OneDrive. The powershell script looks for the folder on start, if it doesn't exist the folder is created and a base set of files is copied in. Running 10 SP4.

Is the 'local folder' you are using for 'start in' also where all your personal ini settings are stored. Is yours filling up with scheduling logs and copies of documents which have been dragged in?

No. We use our VEScripts product which sets the users' registry to point their INI files to a network share. The start in folder only has the minimal client files required to launch Visual off a network share.

We're a Synergy customer that has VEScripts set up since we went to Visual, and works as Peter stated. Basically the stuff you generate like Excel dumps / reports go in the local client folder, but all the login / macros / Visual-related config files are stored server-side via AD, and server-side executables / logs / etc are all on a server share. Well worth the price of admission, but i might be biased
