Auto populate a custom field on one IDO from another IDO on creation

I have a custom field on Items and Lots. These need to be stored separately. 

I would like to auto populate the field on the lots ido from the data on the Items Ido for the default data. 

Example:

I have an Item 123 with this custom field HandTime with 890 in it.

On creation of a new lot for this item

Item: 123

Lot: abc

HandTime: 890

Extend/Replace the Lot IDO and add a new derived field. Set the derived field's implementation equal to (SELECT item.hand_time FROM dbo.item WHERE item.item = Item) 

When creating a new record in the Lots form, the HandTime field will be populated once the record is saved.
