Infor Lawson 10 on Linux
unknown
My company is in the planning phases of an upgrade to Lawson 10. Lawson currently runs on HP-UX servers/OS. We're moving away from HP-UX out since our other major business systems are moving to Linux. I see where Infor Lawson 10 support Linux but we're being told a mixture of no one is running on Linux or no one's interested in Linux.
Is anyone reading this using Lawson 10 on Linux or seriously looking to do so?
Thanks.

If it were up to the other sys admin and myself, we'd be running on Linux.
Our current 9.0.1 version is running on Solaris.
Unfortunately, that decision is not entirely up to us. Our direct boss really wants us to run Infor 10 on Redhat, but again, I don't believe the decision is entirely his either.
Our upgrade to Infor 10 got pushed back a full year, though so not sure where we'll be when the time comes.

Hi Robert -
It is true that no one is currently live on Linux on v10. As the platform support is unique to v10, it would require making that choice of both upgrading and a platform change to Linux, so the pool of customers is not large thus far. But there are two customers in progress (to my knowledge) but not yet live.
I am interested where you are hearing that no one is interested in using Linux, because I believe the opposite is true and that there is a significant number of clients that will adopt this platform choice as part of their v10 upgrade now that it is supported by Infor.

We are very interested in moving to Linux. We will certainly be evaluating that when we are making our plans for upgrading.

I don't know about HP-UX, but Solaris licensing and support are cheaper than RedHat. I think it would be better for Infor to support Solaris_x86 instead. The OS is guaranteed to be binary compatible, so all Infor has to do is slap their code on an Intel box and compile it without any porting or creative IPC fixes. Solaris on Intel platform is far more stable and unbreakable than any Linux has ever been. I would only consider a move off SPARC if this was an option. Maybe version 11?

Yes, I know companies are interested in moving to an open stack of technology for cost savings.
Info Lawson has only recently supported Linux for LSF (since 10.3); so it's not surprising many haven't made the transition yet. I predict that we'll see more Linux adopters as the wave of 9-to-10 upgrades happen next year (and beyond).

FYI: Solaris version 11 will be certified (on SPARC), but after that, Infor intends to focus primarily on HP, Redhat and Windows... at least according to the latest rumors.
I think "we" are beginning to see the light as far as the future of Solaris and Infor.

I haven't heard these rumors. Maybe they are just that, maybe not. There was a time when I would have jumped at the chance to run Lawson on Linux, but after learning many of the internals I'm not so sure I would take that leap. It makes no difference to me if they will certify Solaris 11 or not. 10 is a great platform that will be supported by Oracle for another 10 years so I'm not in a rush. What I am more concerned about is they have FOUR different app servers in the current configuration. I get that they want to move to free third party tools, but why all the different platforms? And to make things worse, I've heard a rumor (direct and in person from an Infor employee who would know) that JBoss might be added to this mix -- possibly as a replacement for WAS, but not likely to be more than just another platform to have to support and make it play nice with everything else.
Hmmm..... WebSphere, Landmark, SharePoint, .Net, and possibly JBoss -- all to stick a form in your browser with a few buttons. Moving off Solaris is the least of my worries.

Hans,
The "there's no Linux interest" sentiment came from both our Infor account manager and the primary 3rd party Infor upgrade consultant we're evaluating.

Hi Robert - can you email me names offline (hans.mueller@infor.com)?
Sal - I will ping our tech team about Solaris_x86, not sure if that is on the roadmap. Not sure I understand the four different app server comment? We are adding JBoss, to provide an open source alternative to WAS that many have been asking for - open source support is a company directive from Charles on down. You wouldn't run WebSphere and JBoss together.
v11 is Landmark based, so currently supported platforms would be same for initial release - Windows, AIX (not HP), Linux. HTML5 will be standard within Ming.le, and WebSphere or JBoss as the app server. We would look at other platforms where they make sense. Details at Inforum

What do you mean by "v11 is Landmark based"? Are you talking about LSF?
Hans Mueller
Lawson "v11" was referenced above, and Lawson "v11" is built on Landmark, it is not built on LSF (cobol based technology). Does that help?

Yes, thanks. So now what does "not HP" mean?
Hans Mueller
HP-UX is currently not supported for Landmark (AIX is), so I was just correcting Greg's post above.

We are also trying to decide between Linux and AIX. This is an old post but I was wondering if there are more people moving to Linux and if so, what was the experience?

We just had a user group meeting yesterday where they reported that they have one customer on v10 with RedHat.
I think more clients will seriously look at moving to open source when they also have an open source database option. I've heard that PostgreSQL may be a supported DB soon; not sure where things are with that.

As the OP on this thread, my company's current plan is to move to Linux when we perform our Lawson 10 apps upgrade.
In January, we spoke with the then only live Lawson customer on Linux. We came away felling very comfortable with Lawson on Linux. And, per Hans, there are others implementing on Lawson on Linux and a few upgrade to Lawson 10 on Linux.

Thanks Robert. How did you get in contact with the company that is using Linux? Did your account rep set it up

Hans Muller (hmueller19) facilitated the initial contact.
