v12 Excel Add In Questions

Hello community,

after having v12 Test system running, I have some questions regarding Excel integration:

1.) In v11 if I had a MEMBER.CNAME-Formula, double click on this opened an popup which let me select an element. In v12 I only found the way by using the new Task Pane and "Edit Element Formula" there. Is there a possibility to open the dialogue via double click again?

2.) In v11 we sometimes use MEMBER.NAME to derive the Uniquename of an Element. Is there an equivalent of this Formula in v12? Otherwise wie would need to build the uniquenames "manually" in a Formula.

3.) I realized that the Data Connection in the Formula somehow needs DBName_DBName as String Parameter instead of just DBName (UniqueName of the Application in Application Manager is also only DBName, but the DB was imported from v11), any idea why this is like this?

Hi Florian,

1) This is "by design". You will now do all the work in the navigation panes, no more double-clicks or context menus.

2) You can use the INFOR.GET.ELEMENT formula, using this basic structure:

=INFOR.GET.ELEMENT(connection,cube,"MEMBER_UNIQUE_NAME",[dimension],element)

3) This is really Application_Connection. You could have several data connections in your application. In many cases, you will use the Olap database which belongs to your application. In this case, it will look as you describe. But you could also use the OLAP database of a different application, with the connection to that database added to your application. Does this make sense?

Regarding 2) It seems that this Formula works well with Unique Names, but not if I only have the element name. As a workaround I can construct it as string.

I have some additional questions:

4) Is it possible/planned to have a possibility like in AppStudio to nest Dimensions in an Ad-hoc report. E.g I want to retrieve only Actuals from PY, but Plan and Actuals from Current Year? In AppStudio you have the possibility to define sections.

5) Is it possible to dynamically retrieve elements from a hierarchy? Like in AppStudio where you can define get all Descendants at a given level. I would expect a dynamic range instead of a fixed list then?

6) Regarding Writeback: When does it switch back to non writeback mode (especially when automatic calculation is enabled I sometimes got the content of the cells changed, writeback disabled)? BTW: I believe the separation of get/read and that you explicitly have to enable writeback is a big step forward.

7) Is it possible to distinguish between 0 and NULL/empty?

8) Is it somehow possible to work with subsets as selections?

4) As of now you can do that only with cell-based report but we have it in the backlog and we are working on introduction of segments support. No timeline though, sorry

5) Sure, you should be able to add dynamic selections, e.g. like this:

6) This is one of the limitations coming as of now from MS Office.js -> when you type too fast (or eventually use copy paste incorrectly) then it will result into this. We don't have any access to clipboard + there are no "before" events and so we had to workaround that a bit. Thanks for the feedback!

7) As of now not, can you please describe the scenario where you need that?

8) you can use existing subsets, i.e. if you create subsets in OLAP, then when you use subset UN in formulas it will work. However there is no UI support (and as such it is not available in Ad-hoc) as of now. We have it on our radar though. How important is it for you compared to other features?

Hi,

in addition to Excel-Ad-Hoc it might make sense to take dynamic formula-reports into consideration:

using INFOR.GET.ELEMENTS / INFOR.GET.AXIS / INFOR.READ.VALUES can combine MDX-Expressions for the axis-selections with Excel-Arrays to create dynamic reports that are very close to Ad-Hoc.
