Creativity Needed: IC12 inventory item On Hold
unknown
Any suggestion on ways to put an item on hold in IC12. We are working on integrating with a warehouse system and would like that ability. We currently issue the items out of inventory and 'hold' them yet that is not a good practice. Ideas welcome...thanks.

If I understand your question, then what you really want to do is inactivate the item at the inventory location. Is that correct?
There is a flag to inactivate the item at the inventory location, but it would first have to be removed from any par or other inventory location that uses it as a replenishment source. You also will want to deplete your stock on hand.

Is the purpose of the "hold" just to delay delivery?

A couple of reasons:
Discrepant inventory – (picker identifies inventory off – needs to go on hold for research)
In transit hold – (item is not in a pickable location)
Got a suggestion to use Bin Location (thanks) yet just remembered that we aren't going to use Bin Locations in the S3 side and will only use them on the SCE side. The inactivate function won't be too helpful as these are inventory items that are located on all kinds of pars and other storerooms.

I wish I could think of something, but nothing is coming to mind. I will say though that no one has stock on hand for all inventory items at 100% accuracy (which you already know). Most function with the knowledge that there is always going to be some error on any item at some point. Do you want to stop any future transaction for the item when you know it is off until it is fixed? Wouldn't this disrupt other departments or customer needs? Our practice is to adjust the inventory (IC24.1) as soon as we know it is off, but we allow transactions to continue during this time. Also, would you go through the process of holding the item and researching it even if the discrepancy is a few dollars?

Here's a thought ... I understand you do not use bin tracking, however you could create a hold bin (doesn't allow issues) just for these circumstances.
Then for item in question ... Turn bin tracking on and add this hold bin as a preferred bin for the item in question on IC12 ... it should transfer all inventory balances to that bin and not allow issues. No gl entry should be created from this action.
Then when "discrepancy" is resolved, turn bin tracking back to N which should delete the SOHDETAIL (bin) record and new issues.
Not sure if/how this could affect auto-reorder OR what might happen if you have shipments in progress for this item.
If you think it might work ... you'll probably have to test the scenario to see how it plays out ...
Ok everyone -- Go ahead and shoot holes in this idea ... I'm sure I've missed something key?

Hey Pam - That is more than what I could come up with! I really don't know how that would turn out. Like you recommended, there would need to be a fair amount of testing. Are you sure that the inventory balances would be transferred to the bin automatically when you turn on bin tracking and add the hold bin? You wouldn't need IC90.1 Bin Transfers?

Love the ideas...thanks so much. Will try to let you all know how the testing turns out.

Stace -- Yep I'm sure that if you turn bin tracking on with a preferred bin defined on IC12, the system will put the full quantity on hand in that bin.
This is a great way to "fix" issues when your ITEMLOC and SOHDETAIL quantities don't match.
So if you currently have bin tracking on for your items, you just need to turn tracking off (which deletes the SOHDETAIL record) and then back on with a preferred bin (recreates a SOHDETAIL record) ... if I remember correctly, it can get tricky if you have outstanding transactions out there.

Good to know. Thanks, Pam.

What makes the bin a "hold" bin? Whether I turn bin tracking to Y or N it doesn't stop transactions from happening. As long as the item is set to Allow Issues the system will accept requests for it.

The bin can be set up not to allow issues (or receipts for that matter) so this should prevent transactions from being processed as there wouldn't be any SOH available to issue. I don't believe this would stop any new requisitions from being entered for this item though.
Stace Webley
I'm pretty sure it wouldn't stop req's from being created against the item. What would happen is you would either get demand created in the WHDEMAND table if you are set to fill back orders or the demand would be killed when released because of insufficient SOH.
