Opera II Partial Postings
Alex Aherne
Hi all,
I have a problem at a customer site that has been ongoing for a few months now and I am hoping that someone can give me some pointers of where to look/how to rectify this.
The customer is running version 6.80.10 of Opera II. This version is now unsupported by Pegasus so we are unable to get support. I have explained this to the customer and recommended an upgrade but so far they won't.
Every month they are getting partial updates in their databases from SOP postings. They process around 300+ invoices a month and around 1% of these result in a partial update of the databases. Stran and Sname get updated but Sanal and Snoml do not and neither does Ctran.
We have recently established that Opera does not crash when this occurs. They have been keeping a log of which user and which computer generated which invoices. Two went missing in September and there were no crashes on the day they were created. I have checked the event logs on that computer and on the server for that day and can't see any relevant issues.
The customer is, understandably, upset that this keeps occurring and I do not have a solution.
They have been using this version since March 2010 and the problems started occurring in February of this year. They have also been experiencing locking conflicts, which is something that never happened before (I have switched off 'update company balances').
The only change on the system we are aware of is a change in their hardware supplier who also changed their antivirus to the new version of Trend. We have provided AV exclusions and they have confirmed they are in place.
If anyone has any ideas at all they would be most gratefully received.
Thanks,
Alex

Alex,
Can't be just a coincidence about the trend. We've had sites where the report frx file has suddenly gone due to the AV taking too long to scan the file.
i'd check they've put them on the cleint folders as well and if you're able check they've excluded the right folders yourself. also check its not the SMB 2.0 issue we had a couple of years ago. if the server is 2008 and NOT on sp2 that caused a damaged cdx but could also be something to check.

Hi Kiran,
Thanks for your quick reply!
Unfortuately the new version of Trend doesn't allow me to view the on-access scanning so I can't see the files being scanned as they're accessed.
We have provided exclusions which cover the server and the workstations and their hardware supplier has stated they have implemented them. We do not have access to the AV, it requires a password and they won't give to us.
We've also tried packing and reindexing the relevant tables as well as running UDS' but none of this seems to make any difference.
The server is 2008 so I will check which service pack they are runnning but I am sure that the workstations are XP and not Win7.
Thanks,
Alex

Alex,
it only takes 1 or 2 pcs to be vista or windows 7 and the server will mix smb 1 and 2 which causes problems. if 2008 isn't sp2 they need to load the service pack and MUST do the same on the vista/windows 7 pcs. if one or the other is on the original release it will crash.

I've connected to the customers system and double checked and the main server Opera is installed on is 2003 and it's the terminal server that's 2008.
Thanks,

This is very interesting we have had a exactly the same issue at one of our sites large amounts of invoices being processed and the STRAN, IHEAD and ITRAN update correctly but nothing in SANAL, SNOML or any Stock files. Had a bbflashback file of them processing where the problem occurs and you can see the message at the bottom saying waiting for lock but this clears and customer believes has posted ok.
Running on Windows 2003 Server and windows 7 workstations have all exclusions set on anit-virus. They are running 7.00.00 of Opera II. We are planning to upgrade the client to Windows 2008 in the next couple of weeks and hoping this will resolve the issue.
What is concerning is that Opera is not telling you it is having problems updating files and unless the client runs the daily reports we have written for them they would have no way of knowing of the issue until they come to reconcile their accounts.
Alex I would say we have noticed this more over the last year as well. I will let you know and Pegasus know if we find 2008 resolves the issue with SMB2 set correctly of course.
Thanks
Rob

Hi Rob,
I am glad we are not the only ones!
We have now managed to get the customer to agree to an upgrade which will be scheduled for later this month. They will be updated to the latest version so that will be 7.10 currently or 7.11 if it is out by then,
I am only a little hopeful this will make a difference but you never know!

Hope it makes a difference Alex. We are planning the server upgrade at the site this weekend so watch this space.

Hi Rob,
Have you managed to upgrade your site yet? Have you noticed any difference?
We upgraded Opera at our site but only on Tuesday so I am waiting to see if this will make any difference.
Kind regards,
Alex

sorry for the delay in coming back, but waiting for some definate conclusions after the upgrade. Having upgraded to 2008 R2 the system is running a lot faster on windows 7 pc which we already knew would happen. It does seem to have resolved the partial updating of data, however not entirely convinced this is the reason for it being fixed. They are not getting locking issues as they did before so by definition believe they are not having the symptoms that cause the partial update. I have the incident open with Pegasus and they are investigating.
Thanks
Rob
