IIS 6 Web Server usage monitoring and capacity planning methods
unknown
As utilization of EMSS grows we would like to start monitoring utilization, do some capacity planning and possible tuning. Do any facilities exist within the IIS6 product for determining useful statistics such as who has logged in and when, current and max user load, etc? If not what products are administrators using to accomplish these tasks? Thanks.

I don't know about facilities within IIS6 but have you checked out the
Infor Security Services product? If you look in the Configuration Guide it shows the type of details it will monitor and report on. Its a free download if you are at the right system levels. An Infor rep mentioned they know some customers are using it to track activity on things like Open Enrollment so you could use it for EMSS reporting from what I understand.

Not sure about IIS since we're running on AIX, but I'm in the process of writing a script to scan the web server log for access to things like "paychecks.htm" and other self-service htm files to find out usage. Pretty simple on UNIX to use a grep -c command, not sure how on windows you could do that, but I would imagine a perl script could rip through the web server log pretty quickly.

Can anyone elaborate on what infor Secuirity Services are and if they will run on LSF 9.0.1.9? We still have not migrated from the LAUA to LSF security model. Is this a replacement for that or a companion product? I was hoping there would be something delivered (rudimentary al least) to provide this information rather than resorting to using grep on the log files. Thanks.

ISS is not a replacement for LSF security, it is a monitoring utility to monitor system usage.
I'm pretty sure ISS does run on 9.0.1.9. I was having some issues getting it to work properly on 9.0.1.11, but I think there were a few patches to resolve some of the issues. Not sure if all the patches are available on 9.0.1.9 or not. If you're still run LAUA, it would probably do the basic monitoring to capture user login and session data, but I don't know if it would show system code and form access or not.

ISS can be used for user management for LSF and Landmark. It can also be used to synchronize roles, actors, endpoints, identities, etc.
The tool is really coming along and has made great strides recently.

But like Jeremy said, you've got to get from LAUA to lase first.

Thanks, so it sounds like at the present time ISS is not going to be the solution. Is anyone else using a Miscrosoft or 3rd party tool?

I thought ISS could only be used when you use Landmark and LSF, but only against LSF?

I use Webalizer to analyze the webserver http logs. You would have to manually match up Webalizer's analysis with another product's platform analysis.

It is not a real time monitor, but it gives good hourly, daily and monthly usage profiles, top users, counts of various response codes. Strictly speaking, it's Unix product, but there is a port for Windows that runs under a Cygwin Unix emulator. I run it on Unix. It is available free, GNU General Public License.
Like most Unix products, it's not for the easily frustrated. But then, capacity planning isn't for the easily frustrated, either.

I just came from southeast mega meeting and velocity did a demo on a tool they have developed for just that purpose.

Originally developed for their hosted clients I think they mentioned it was now available for other clients.

I am really surprised that Microsoft was that short sighted not to have provided any native tools to do this. The webalyzer tool looks promising thanks for the tip!
