Using Tablet Camera instead of a a bar code scanner
unknown
We have started using a MS surface tablet in the shop and I am wondering if there is a good way to use the camera to read bar codes on a work order rather than a bar code scanner.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank
Stephen.

I looked into this last year and had no luck with using the camera. Instead, we use usb attached scanners from amazon.com with Dell Latitude 10 tablets.

Just have to set the scanners to NOT scan automatically when an object is near.
But I would be interested if anyone finds a way to use the camera.

Haven't had much luck with CCD type scanners in our environment. Even the USB CCD gun scanners didn't work well for us. (machine shop, work orders in plastic sleeves) Only laser type work consistently here. There may be a Bluetooth solution that would work with the Surface (I own one so I am curious as well). All I have seen still use CCD but might be interesting. Try Amazon Search bluetooth barcode. .... Just noticed Motorola CS3070 it is laser as well as batch collector or live Bluetooth.....

As to previous post, if you do look at Motorola, make sure it is Live Bluetooth (keyboard wedge emulator) and not just batch download via Bluetooth (collect and send)

We had Bluetooth scanners with ipads but when the Bluetooth dropped, our users had trouble adding it back on or the battery died. So I went with wired scanners and that took away that issue. But you may have better luck than I.

We switched to using a QRCode and it scans from either. We even scan from the PC screens on the shop floor.

Interesting. Tell us more about your setup please.

We have developed a live traveler using asp.net. Each resource has a pc and a screen that shows all orders ready for that operation on that resource. When you select your order it pulls all data necessary for that operation and displays it on the screen along with the QRCode. I would like to automate the labor ticket transactions but we use trace and I haven't been willing to do it yet. We scan the QRCode for entering BCLabor tickets. It was an investment in thin clients, screens and 2D scanners but it works well.
