401k Match for Pre-Tax & Post-Tax in BN
marshr
We are having a problem with our company match for our 401k plans and I am wondering if anyone has had a similar problem and how it was resolved. We have a 401k pre-tax plan and a Roth 401k plan set up in benefits. The company matches 100% of the first 3% and 50% of the next 2%. For the employees who are deferring to both plans, the company match is being calculated without regard for the pre-tax plan and we need the match to calculate based on the total of the plans and not independently. Any suggestions on how to accomplish this within the system? Thank you in advance.

We had our pre-tax and post tax deductions set up as one plan. This was the only way we were able to control the match limits of the two plans

We ahave after tax with our pre-tax plan and Roth as a separate - I would also be interested if there is a way to do this.

I spent a LONG time trying to find a solution to our matching logic and ultimately we decided to go a different route as we only had a handful of EEs eligible for the match. We flag the EEs using a user-field, then I created a report (using Crystal Reports and a SQL query) to get the needed data and perform the complex logic. The report is run when our PR Analyst needs the matching contribution amount and she adds the contribution calculated for each EE using PR39.1 for the PR run. All in all, for us, it was a much more simple, and more maintainable, solution. It may not be right for you but it saved the day for us.

JRiddick- Would you be able to send me a screen-print of your BN setup for having the pre-tax and post-tax deductions in one plan? I believe we tried that idea in test and weren't able to get it to work.

We seperate the plans for the pre tax and post tax. Our plans, especially the match plans, are complex, so we had to create custom calculations.

JRiddick - I would also be interested to see how you set up one plan with both pre and after tax deductions and only one match. We had to use two plans and a custom calculation - my email address - stephanie.harris@mail.house.gov

If I'm reading your situation correctly, there is a work around. Link to KB below (hopefully it works - otherwise search 401k pretax and roth in the KB).
We setup our 401k plan with pretax and Roth in the same plan using this "work around". You have to add the deduction for Roth as "taxable", add it to BN15 and then go back to PR05 and change it to tax status 16 "401k Roth".

Thank you to everyone. We were able to modify I plans and fix the issue.

I have set up a Roth 403(b) deduction in the same plan as the 403(b). If the employee is already enrolled in the 403(b) how do you enroll them in the Roth 403(b) deduction. I haven't been able to enroll them using the BN31.2, error message is "cannot enter after-tax, only pre-tax allowed". I was able to enroll them on the PR14, using the Roth deduction code. Is the PR14 the only way to enroll them in the Roth.

Ours is a 401k with pretax and roth in the same plan - and this is how we do it. See attached.

We have a rule in this facility. We never enter benefit deductions directly on the PR14 because then it is not tied to the plan. It can cause issues later on.
I would guess you don't have your contribution record flagged to accept Contribution types, contribution tax types and match options equal to both (BN18.7 or BN18.6)
