Design Studio and Upgrades

My experience has been that I have had to redo Design Studio objects when there are changes to the associated program.  For example, I found a bug in one of the AP inquiry screens which skipped lines when you paged through the detail lines.  When I applied the patch which fixed the issue, the Design Studio screen failed until I repainted the screen and put back the changes which were minimal but the base program was fine.  Design Studio is on the list as a good way to customize while COBOL is not.  Does anyone know why?

Angela - I do know specifically why your problem is happening. That involves the internals of Design Studio. My best guess is that the screen changed, so it "broke" your Design Studio customization.



I will answer the question of, Why is Design Studio a good way to customize?



Customization options and their drawbacks:



o> Customize a 4GL program: The source code is customized and will NOT be updated automatically with any CTP. Big headache.



o> Copy a 4GL program into a new custom program: Better solution, however every time the source program is updated by a CTP, the new custom program has to be updated with the same changes. This can be tedious and take a long time.



o> Customize with Design Studio: This is supposed to be a no-brainer. When the program is updated, Design Studio is not supposed to know about it & all will continue. HOWEVER from what you're telling us, if there are any SCREEN CHANGES, it breaks Design Studio. To fix requires the procedure you outlined. This is much less trouble than maintaining source code in 4Gl, where you have to update an .scr screen in a customized copy of a program, believe me!
