Using AP145 to Print 1099s

Hello - we used to use tax form software you can buy from a Staples or Office Max to print 1099's, now our AP team wanted to see if they could use AP145 to print out tax forms.

We ran the job, and noticed that you wouldn't be able to do this directly off the PDF output as it has a standard header and footer generated by the job that would print on the form as is. But if you get to the raw text file, it looks like you might be able to open this up in Word and format/manipulate to get to print properly.

Has anyone gone the format-via-Word route to print these? If so, was there any simple trick you did to get to format correctly? Or was it a lot of work? Is there another, better way to do this than using Word for this? Or is 3rd-party software the only viable route? Any suggestions are appreciated.

We opted to use MHC for printing needs in Lawson. It was worth the extra cost. Trying to use the system output was just too time consuming and the extra features in MHC made life much easier on us.

There's another way. Before using MHC or other post-processing print solutions, I used to print 1099's, W-2's etc. directly from the raw text file onto paper. It required using pre-printed forms, multi-part, run through a dot-matrix printer (remember those? I'm dating myself!). That's the way the AP145 output is set up, to go onto pre-printed forms. I believe (though have not tested it) that you could use pre-printed forms on a laser printer to do the same thing. Once a set of "blank" forms would be printed on a laser printer, with all the correct boxes and other form information. You would then run them through the laser printer a 2nd time to pick up the Lawson output from AP145. That's if you want to go to the trouble of doing it yourself. MHC and other post-processing print solutions do the same thing in one pass: They take the Lawson input and position it within a laser-printed form. It's all in one and elegant, well worth the cost. I will vouch for MHC's support, I've used them for years and the support is superb.
