Is BSI the only tax 'product' for use with payroll?

Curious if anyone uses something else?

Also curious if anyone has 'struggles' with BSI.

We use BSI also, but would be interested if there are other products that perform the same functions.

As far as struggles: Yes, the release schedule: They are all "mandatory" releases, but when you actually get the release notes, you find out it is for one particular district that you don't have any employees in. Really frustrating. All that time and effort to install on test systems and migrate to production. All for something you don't need.

Our history: early version 9: install on 20 pcs in HR and a couple in IT. Each release required a visit to each PC. As much as I like visiting our HR colleagues, it's an interruption for them and IT.

We moved to a server when I started supporting BSI. After users learned to remote to the server to run BSI things went well, as long as they would logoff the server rather than just disconnecting the session.

Ver 10 was much better since it's all server based, with each new release a new URL is distributed. Publish the new URL when you're done with the cyclic upgrade.

Since 10.0f, Tax Factory/Tax Locator been more stable.

Now if we could do releases (cyclic) just once a year, with bulletins as needed.

I've found their tech support generally good. If you have a complicated issue, they have excellent 2 & 3 level techs. And their documentation is constantly improving.

We also have BSI. We have been told that they are the only ones.

Just stay within 2 months of any cyclic issued and 1 month of all bulletins.

Don't fall behind.

Make sure you have at least 1 person receiving their email alerts.

And make sure you aren't late on mailing the payment or they cut you off the day after.

Since F, much more stable.

Recently we had to install a newer version of Java, but it is in a folder by itself and we point BSI to the newer version.

IT does the Cyclic updates. Payroll does the bulletins.

Careful about bulletins as needed. I missed reading the details of a bulletin and we missed applying a federal tax bulletin. You have to apply all bulletins, you can't skip even one. We just check them every other week and install during off cycle payroll weeks.

And if you miss one, you have to re-apply all since that one.

Or ask BSI for an updated consolidated set (with associated $$).

To chime in on the BSI struggles, their strict policy of only talking to two contacts within our organization is not working for us.

We have more than two people that get involved in the application and update process, but they will not even listen to someone not on their contact list even though that person is still a customer of theirs who is in need. Very frustrating. I would like to evaluate alternative tax table services for Lawson. Our company is solely in California and we don't need any other state's updates.

Thanks everyone. I'm an IT resource and we have been live since May. We are staying current on our bsi releases and agree the '2 person contact role' is frustrating.

I'm trying to gather more detailed information but here our Payroll staff have a lot of manual work and manual edits to do because of BSI.. which sounds out of ordinary to me.. like edits related to W4's. Again... I don't have details, just wanted to reach out to the rest of you.

2 person contacts: We tried requesting our Support Team mailbox so everyone on our IT support team would have access to the messages. It's verboten -- has to be a personal email address.

We have some custom table updates. If you understand the back up and restore process during upgrades its not overly complicated, just don't forget to do it.

As far as: are the manual edits necessary, only you (and your colleagues) can determine that. This might be an "opportunity for growth".

Just make sure one of your "contacts" is the address to an email group in your organization and add as many people as you need to it.
