We are on a Windows 2012 server and using AD LDS....

Trying to find out what method others are using to back up the DB and log files?

Also....do you leave the instance running when backing up, and when backup is

running, are users still able to access the system?

We are 2012 R2 and using ADLDS as well. We have a schedule job that runs a Powershell script to do the backup of the database and then renames the file each time it is ran so we can restore to a different date/time if necessary. The script runs the dsdbutil to do the backup and you can run it when users are still on the system.

Thank you....is the purpose of the dsdbutil that it allows for the backup of the DB and logs only, whereas the Windows Backup server would back up the entire directory structure?

The dsdbutil does a full backup.

Can you run the dsdbutil while the system is available for updating to the end users? Or do you 'lock down' the system at some point in time; before running dsdbutil?

This is a Windows backup utility, similar to SQL Server backups, which requires that the system is up and running for the backup to work. If you want to use "normal" backup tools while the system is down, you have to back up a whole lot of files, so Microsoft came up with this type of 'live' backup. Plus finding the time to have the system down ... sometimes it just isn't possible. A 'live' backup can be run many times during the day, if desired. Although if you want to prevent user activity while backup is running, you could run it during a time when users are not expected to be on the system, like late in the evening or early in the morning.
