Microsoft Components required for Federation to non Infor product

Can anyone share their experience with what Microsoft components were required to do perform a Federation?

We are not a Landmark shop but need to perform a Federation to another vendors product to support SAML SSO and I'm trying to determine scope of effort and if there will be any additional component or licensing cost above what Microsoft provides out of the box with LDAP and AD.

After further research it sounds like we will need to install ADFS which I'm told is not used for the AD Bind and Federation steps for Infor. Has anyone used ADFS to support SSO to non Infor web applications and if so were there any licensing costs and was it difficult to configure?
