Process for Data Copy using SQL

Hello, I'm fairly new to the Technology side of things in Lawson, but was wondering how do you do a Data Copy without the Lawson/INFOR tools that they have?

We usually do a data copy from our SQL backups that we preform each night, usually our DBA does this for us and it works,(he is fairly new to our organization and to Lawson/INFOR) however our AP and GL information is not consistent, they are saying that not a lot of their data is in there when we do the data copy into TEST, but I don't see how that can be because it is the complete backup of data that we are using each night.

Wondering if any of you have a guide on how to do a Data Copy with SQL that I could pass along to our DBA so that he could see how it is possibly done.

What kind of backups are you performing (i.e. no database activity)?

Do you shut down Lawson before backups begin?

What's the database that you're running? DB2, Oracle, MS SQL Server?

What database information is missing? Core tables, reference tables, or "peripheral" data.

Do you copy LOGAN and GEN data also or just the Product line data?

Are your Object Ids consistent?

We preform a Full Database backup around 2am in the morning when nobody is on the system and no activity is going on.

We don't shut down Lawson when the backups begin.

We are using MS SQL Server.

I think that we are missing the peripheral data, as users from AP and GL are saying that it is not consistent with the PROD data.

We only copy the Product Line data, do we need to copy the LOGAN and GEN tables as well?

Sorry, what are the Object ID's? I'm still fairly new to this so not quite sure what this is.

What is the reason for not wanting to use the Lawson/INFOR tools? The export and import of the data dump is a pretty straight forward process is this insufficient for your needs?

This is the process I have in place for our site. We have 3 environments (DEV, TEST, PROD) so we sometimes copy our TEST over our DEV.

So, how would you get a file from your PROD system to be able to put into your TEST system? It looks like you are just doing this with your TEST system.

User might mean their jobnames and print files aren't on the test system. I'd get clarification of what they mean with "not consistent". if so, lawson has a job dump command. And though I'm on oracle, I'd recommend a full backup and then drop the test account and add it back. it's possible that data already exists and it's not getting inserted due to conflicts. and I copy over to a differnt server just the oracle owner account and the tax factory owner and associated tables. Lastly, make sure you are on the CTP patch level between test and prod. Any patches on test, will affect how prod data loads.

Hi there. A 'data refresh' can mean different things to different users and administrators. There are several factors to consider, such as the application data, user jobs, user reports, user personalizations, administrator configurations, GEN metadata, and product line source code..just to name a few. You will want to work with your user community to determine what they consider an acceptable data refresh policy so they can test data in lower (non prod) environments. There are quite a few ways to approach a data refresh policy, and the steps for the application data refresh in JoshLeclerc's policy are quite good. If you would like some training on how to create and implement a sound data refresh policy for your company, consider getting some training. There is an Infor Education class you can take that will teach you about managing your data. The name of the class is Lawson: Administering Data, and you can get more information on Infor Campus if you are interested. https://campus.infor.com. Alternatively, you can learn about product line copy utilities available to you using the Infor Lawson Administration Server Setup & Maintenance administration guide. Can you use back end SQL tools for a data refresh? Yes, you can, but please keep in mind that process is not supported and you run the risk of corrupting your destination environment. You definitely don't want to use SQL to copy GEN between environments.
