Connecting Tableau directly to Lawson via ODBC

We've just started experimenting with Tableau. I've connected to our Lawson test server via ODBC but I'm wary of connecting to production because I don't know if it will cause undue stress on the server. In other words I don't want to crash production. We don't have any Lawson data stored on a separate SQL server that I could access with Tableau. I do use Crystal on production via ODBC without issue.

I'm interested to hear the discussion on this, as we Tableau now but haven't ventured into connecting it to Lawson yet. Are you on Lawson 9 or Lawson 10? We are on Lawson 10.

We have tableau and lawson 10 sql 2014 I assume you have a DW if so port the lawson tables that you need to the DW nightly.

We do not have a data warehouse. Since we implemented Epic though there has been effort to create one. But currently only for Epic data.

We send our data from Lawson (cloud hosted, v10, single tenant) to an on premise DW. From there we connect it to Tableau. Most of the data is updated nightly, but some weekly. We are only sending tables that have been needed for project requests.

We use text files as the datasource instead of a live connection.

Our SIS system uses tableau. Tableau has it's own DW. We copy and restore the whole SIS db every night to tableau DW and run reports from the tableau DB. When you install tableau it s/b with a DB. create another DB and script tables to it overnight.

Stace, we're looking at this again and may set up our own DW. Are you using Tableau to create dashboards? This is the direction we want to go.

Hi @jon-athey - in 2019 we went to CSF now known as FSM. It took us awhile to convert our data feeds, but we eventually got through it. We still use Tableau and our own DW. To send our application data we use what's called Replication Sets in FSM which is the copy of db tables (business classes in FSM) through CSV to the destination. Then our data warehouse developers ingest the data with ETL's. Once the data is loaded in the DW it is ready for dashboard use in Tableau.
