Is there a limit on number of UET fields added to a class?

I need to add 18 UET fields to the item class and I already have 19.  I seem to remember hitting a limit of 40 a few versions back, so I'm wondering if there is such a limit in 9.00.30.

 

Also, can UET fields be removed simply by deleting the references and impacting schema?
