Anyone concerned about the end of public updates to Java 8 starting January 2019

I'm unclear as to the difference between Java SE, Java JRE, Java JDK, etc. The way I read it SE-Standard Edition which encompasses JRE and JDK will require a support license to continue to receive security updates and fixes after January 2019. Is that the correct interpretation? If so has anyone tried running Infor rich client with Java 9 and/or 10 JRE? I'm going to try soon, but this impacts any application using java JRE. Just checking to see if I understand this correctly and if so what approaches others are taking. Hopefully all our java run applications will work with Java 9, 10, or 11 when it comes out.

Oracle will not post further updates of Java SE 8 to its public download sites for commercial use after January 2019. Customers who need continued access to critical bug fixes and security fixes as well as general maintenance for Java SE 8 or previous versions can get long term support through Oracle Java SE Subscription or Oracle Java SE Desktop Subscription. The JRE, and JDK distributions have slightly different tools. Java Development Kit (JDK) has the compiler and some profiling tools for development. It includes the JRE. The Server JRE package is the version that runs as an application server. It has tools and utilities that are not included in the desktop JRE (Runtime Environment) for monitoring applications. SE is the standard edition, as opposed to ME, which is a mobile platform for games.

I'm not sure if 9, 10, and/or 11 will be 100% backward compatible. Lawson software has a habit of requiring specific versions of third party tools, so if their software checks for "1.8" then no other version will work, and I cannot speak to that. (Rich Client checks if it's running on Windows, which defeats the purpose of writing it in Java so it can run anywhere.)

I am aware of Oracle's attempt to keep everything backward compatible through 1.7, but I am also aware of several Java libraries that are not fully compatible, and this doesn't even consider third party tools like Bouncy Castle.

Extended support for Java 8 runs through March, 2025.

Thank you. But the way I read it you'll have to pay for the extended support. I'm not sure I understood the part about the rich client. I'm pretty sure it requires java.

Yes to both. Rich Client requires Java, and you have to pay for Extended Support.

I am re-opening this topic in the hope others have updated information to share. We are receiving the following Java 8 prompt periodically on our Lawson servers. Has anyone else encountered this issue, and if so, what has been your approach to addressing the Java subscription requirement? Are you paying the Oracle Java subscription to be able to apply updates (presumably includes security patches)? Are you waiting for Infor to support newer versions of Java? Others?

Java has been open sourced and other vendors will be providing long term maintenance in addition to Oracle (some free, some paid). There will not be any functional difference between Java versions from different vendors. Infor dictates which Java version to use. My guess is that they will stick to the Java versions with long term support (8, 11, etc.) . Here is a good article that explains the changes: medium.com/.../java-is-still-free-c02aef8c9e04

Thank you, Dan. If I understand correctly, since Infor has not certified its Lawson products for anything more current than Java 8, we either need to 1) continue to use Java 8 without updates (eg no security patches), 2) pay Oracle for a subscription, or 3) reinstall a non-Oracle Java 8 for use by the Infor products. Is that correct?

That is my interpretation. Infor needs have to clarify it's support for non Oracle Java JDKs. AdoptOpenJDK is providing free maintenance releases for Java 8 (and other versions): https://adoptopenjdk.net/ I believe Red Hat is maintaining the builds.

In some of the newer documentation (i.e. InforOS 12) Infor is directing us to install Amazon Corretto as the JDK, so that is probably the direction they're moving.

I opened a support case regarding this topic. Here's the information provided:

The latest information we have from Product Management is that we expect start supporting Amazon Corretto Java in Spring 2020 with the following releases:

LSF Applications: 10.0.9

LSF Core Technology: 10.0.12

Infor will recommend customer update to the above versions to allow continued support for Java including security updates.
