Run "adhoc" query in a form?

Hi all, 

I am trying to find a way to run a simple query from a form, (through Form Scripts?)..   

Is there a way to do this without going through an IDO?  Basically we have a lookup table when I need to get a value from based on the name of the current form, displaying that returned value. Can I run a raw sql query or do I have to create a new stored procedure and custom method on the IDO for the lookup table?
