PR160 capitalize employee names in check

Hi All,

A requirement is coming down to capitalize the payee line for our checks.

We use Secure32 to print our checks and they told us that it would have to be a custom addon to do this from their end.

Is there a setting or config file for PR160 so that will capitalize the employee names when it creates the laser print file?

Other options?

We always capitalize all the employee names on HR11.

California, I work with the school district. This request is coming from our county but it seems like it is initiated by the bank. They are doing some sort of initiative to make the checks more accessible to the visually impaired. They have other requirements like bigger fonts, no special characters and clean background. I'm too low on the ladder, these are just my guesses.

Hi, KB1211949 confirms that PR160 cannot do this. Since there are other requirements, you might just want to bundle them all and have your check printing partner do the customization. If you want to do the name part yourself, and you don't want to touch the laser file after it comes out of PR160, there are upper case name fields in the EMPLOYEE table (FIRST_NAME_UC and LAST_NAME_UC). It might be worth it to take a look at the PR160 source code to see if you could replace the employee name fields with the uppercase fields. Otherwise you'll have to run the laser file through some additional process to upcase the names.

The way I would do it is to download the employees from the Employee master( Crystal, Addins,Etc), Then in Excel use @upper to convert the names to Upper Case and upload them back with HR511 or Addins. I recommend HR511, it takes csv file format and is easy to populate. I use HR511 all the time. Call if you have any questions 212-598-6882

This is definitely the easiest, if you are OK with your employee names being permanently upcased. Or do you modify the names and then set them back regularly? I suppose you could automate it and make it part of your payroll.

Changing the employee names uppercase then lowercase as part of the payroll process is certainly something we've never thought about! I'll bring it up to the business units if they'll consider it.

The _UC fields in the EMPLOYEE table has promise but we don't want to change PR160 because we will have to maintain it patch after patch.

We're leaning towards editing the laser print file after it is created by PR160. We already have a batch file that grabs them from the lawson app server to the check printing computer. We will likely add a step that will feed the file to a program or script that uppercases the names then proceed.

I would not change them back... We are totally uppercase, I don't see it as a problem and you can tell them it is now a requirement.

Thank you all for the suggestions. Our users run a batch file to copy and prepare the laser print file to the check printing machine. We wrote a powershell script to do the capitalization and added it as an extra step in the batch file.
