Process for Managing Product Phase Out when Interfaced with EHR for Charting/Billing

I'm curious what other organizations are doing when phasing out products when interfaced with an EHR. How to keep the item available for charting/billing, but inactive for ordering.

We change the description to read Item Void use NewItem and inactivate all PO13s, remove from all PO15s and remove reorder information from IC12s. This lets it remain active but will cause errors when reordering.

It's not ideal - my users can and do work around the errors, but it stops most.

We inactivate the item in Lawson and stop sending it through the interface. EPIC still has the item in its records for billing but it can no longer be ordered. If it is an exchange ...use item Y instead, I contact our EPIC team and have them do a global change in their system for the new item. We also put the new item number in the 2nd description. I actually don't change the original description in Lawson - you never now when you might need to go back again to the original item.

FYI - previous description still shows in our audit trail - either IC191 or the sql if we need to restore.
