Change material from one item to another

We have a need on occasion to change a material - like a bolt from one item to a new item.  Any BOMs where the old item is used, we would like to update to the new item.  Has anyone developed a process to do this?  When I spoke with Infor, they said currently the only way to do this was manually!

You could update the items with the new material via a SQL script. I'd caution against this, however, due to circumventing the costing side of things.
