Unpacking .tar files in Windows environment

Can any sys admin advise on how they unpack .tar files provided as a part of patches in a Windows environment? I've never worked with a .tar before. Thank you

I am not aware of windows environment, but my guess is you should be downloading the .zip files for windows not .tar.

I use tar -xvf file_name.tar .

I also forgot to mention that You should do it using LID.

Oh yeah, that's right! When you are on Windows but you use LID, you have access to UNIX-style commands ... like tar.

There is a "Critical transfer Package (CTP) Installation Guide" which details how to untar files, but more importantly, the steps for installing CTPs.
