Restricted to Visual Studio 2015 for IDO Extension Classes in CSI 9.01.01/9.01.10?

I'm working on IDO Extension Classes for our CSI 9 deployment (currently 9.01.01 to be upgraded to 9.01.10 later this year/early next). At the time, I was told that VS2015 is the only supported version for CSI 9. There are numerous VS extensions I want to use but can't due to it being VS2015. Are we able to go higher than VS2015 when developing for CSI 9?

The reason they say that is that VS2015 came with .NET Framework 4.6.1. You can use any VS version, as long as you do a Class Library (.NET Framework) project template and set the .NET Framework version to 4.6.1. Obviously, any extensions you use would have to be compatible with that version of the framework as well.
