Will Infor be providing JDBC access to the Data Lake for external applications?

Greetings;

I've written some middleware to allow me to run SSRS reports from the Data Lake. I was chastised by the Director of Business Intelligence with the statement that Infor is releasing a JDBC driver in the next few months for the Data Lake, that my program would be unsupported by Infor, that Birst should be used for everything, and a few other things.

My real question is, can anyone from the Infor side confirm that there are plans for allowing external access to the Data Lake for programs like SSRS? Would this be through the Enterprise Connector? I haven't heard or read anything about it that I can remember.

Hey Billy,

We've just finished the 12.0.41 update to ION Desk & Data Lake across all regions this past weekend. With that, we've now released the Data Lake's "Compass JDBC" driver. As Kevin mentions, it does require some additional entitlement licensing for data egress out of the cloud. If you already tick that box, then you can download the JDBC driver by going to the Support site and clicking Downloads > Products. You'll find the driver itself under:

Infor SaaS Add-Ons > Technology > Infor OS (formerly Xi Platform).

For configuration details, you can use the steps outlined in KB 2103864

We fully support using and consuming content stored within the Data Lake alongside 3rd party applications, services, and tools. We're an open data platform and so absolutely no objections to SSRS connectivity We'll continue to invest in new enhancements to those APIs and JDBC driver along with introducing new tech. over time - ODBC, Python packages, and so on.

If you don't mind me asking, how have you configured your existing reporting - Compass APIs?

Birst does indeed give you a lot of advantages over having to DIY given you have a complete analytics and visualization stack, user & profile-based management for reporting, and a lot more. However, you are not limited to only using Birst.

Please check with product management, but the current road map has a JDBC driver planned for early-mid next year.

Check that you have the license ION-S-DATALAKE-EXT

Good Afternoon sir;

I wrote a web service that SSRS called for each report. SSRS supports direct XML web service calls. I would pass the Compass Query as a parameter to the web service. The service would call the Compass APIs, parse the result set, and return it to SSRS in a format that it could consume. I don't see ION-S-DATALAKE-EXT on the Infor Product Order for this customer, so we'll contact Sales / Support to get that setup.

Awesome to hear, glad to see developers starting to work up solutions for consumption with 3rd party tools like this. Are you doing incremental data loads when querying Data Lake via Compass?

If not or that hasn't been considered, just adding some food for thought here. You can use Compass' synthetic keys to expose additional metadata associated with records in Data Lake including the Data Object ID, lastModified (file timestamp), row sequence ID, and partition data.

If you want to explore the properties, append

--*includeInSelectAll=s/g/p/l

to the beginning of your query.

You can use the lastModified column to construct queries like SELECT * FROM Products WHERE lastModified >= '2019-11-19T01:47:07.064Z'. On initial load, persist the most recent lastModified value in memory and then the next time you go to query, append it into your query's filter and Compass will only retrieve any new data objects (not rows) to query against.

This helps reduce the number of data objects (aka files) you're having to retrieve which ultimately means reduction in time spent processing.

Greetings;

I had not seen the information on the synthetic keys in the information I had read, that is wonderful. One of my concerns about any replication scheme was related to marking deleted records and doing incremental loads. My reports now don't "load" data per say, but actually execute the query SQL in real time against the Compass APIs.

I will be looking into the metadata information for replication with a local data store for any deeper analysis. I expect however that Birst will be used for any Dashboards and Analytics, and something like SSRS for simpler "flat" reports.

Instead of replication currently, I'm running the Compass query via APIs in real time or on a schedule. I think the JDBC driver will give much better performance when I get access to it.

For example, I write my base query in a Compass API call;

Once I get the data I need in the query, I put it into the SSRS Design tool as a Data Source. Notice the URL before the query SQL, that's to call the middleware I wrote.

Update the Data Set, and build the report as normal.

The only change I'll have to make with JDBC access is to update the data sources to use JDBC instead of the web service. I thought I'd share the process instead of trying to explain it all.

Short Version:

Prerequisites

• SQL query tool (not included)

• infor-compass-jdbc-12.0.41.1.zip (contains the infor-compass-jdbc-12.0.41.1.jar)

• Infor Compass JDBC Driver.ionapi security credentials

• Java 8 or Corretto 8

Security:

Have your ION Administrator create you an IONAPI Security Credentials file for use with the JDBC Driver.

Add a new non-Infor authorized application. Specify: Infor Compass JDBC Driver for the name and description. The name must be exact. Select the "Backend service" type.

Driver Setup:

The instructions are general; they are not based on a specific query tool. The setup instructions may vary depending on the query tool that you are using.

1. Open the SQL query tool.

2. Select the option to setup a new driver.

3. Specify a driver name, such as Compass JDBC Driver.

4. Specify two library paths: One library path to the driver and one path to the directory containing the Infor Compass JDBC Driver.ionapi file.

5. Set the classname to:

com.infor.idl.jdbc.Driver

6. Set the URL to:

jdbc:infordatalake://TENANTNNAME

9. Connect to the Infor Data Lake.

What SQL query tools are folks using? We're trying to use SQL Developer or SSMS but so far DBeaver looks to be the way to go.
