Set parameter action on unprotected cell in Application Studio 11

Hello all,

I am trying to set a parameter when clicking on an unprotected (data-entry) cell in Application Studio (v11). It seems as if action mode "Hyperlink" is not available for unprotected cells.

Is there any way to update a parameter based on the selected cell?

The idea behind this is to display a description for the account data is being entered. Are there other ways to achieve such an effect like mouse-over, tooltip, ...?

I don't know of a good way to do this.

Here is a work-around:

Cover the cell with a button that has the text "Edit" and whose visibility is controlled by a Report Variable (set to TRUE).

In the button's actions, set the parameter you want to set, and also set the report variable to false.

So the user will see an "Edit" button, click on it, and the parameter will appear, and the button will disappear, and the cursor will be in the cell.

Kind of ugly, but the best I can think of.

Thanks a lot for the work-around proposed.

The issue with this approach seems to be, that the report cannot be properly used with keyboard navigation, though.

I guess, I will add the action for the label, only. This works but is not as intuitive as I would like it to be. It is a bit sad, that there is no "OnFocus" action type.

Hi Malte,

Do I understand it right, that a value/string is enterred in the cell und you like to set the parameter parallel? Then the action mode "edited cell" could be the right one. There you can enter values into an unprotected cell. When you confirm with "Enter" the action is executed.

Otherwise, if it is about searching and selecting a concrete element out of a list, try it with the "Lookup" object.

Hi Sylvana,

I was a bit unprecise in my initial posting. In fact, we are using the "edited cell" action mode in order to write values to the database. We are able to set parameters here as well. The issue is, that these parameters will be set after the value has been entered in the cell.

For our scenario, it is important to set the parameter before the value is entered. Otherwise the user knew what had was supposed to enter in the cell after entering the value.

Okay, I understand the issue and know it from other topics. I don't know any way with normal AppStudio functionalities to receive this target.

What I do in such cases of "step by step actions" is to have a click and open a dialog field for entry. But this doesn't help, if you like to use the keyboard navigation.

I don't know the rest of the structure of the report. If it is entering one account info from the top of the report and going done step by step, maybe you could fill the parameter for cell A2 when enterring the value for A1 and show this parameter next to the cell A2. IT's not nice but maybe a work around.

If you find any other solution to this topic in v11, please let us know! I think in v12 there will be some feature of having an order for actions executed. Expectantly waiting for it :-)

Hi Malte,

in addition to edited cell action you can add an action with mode shortcut menu on right-click. The command text can be used as a formular to give users specific information on that cell - if necessary - per right-click.
