AEP version 4 to v5 upgrade

Is there an AEP conversion process from V4 to V5 of the engine? I have only been successful in upgrading by saving a .bs file and copying the text into a new V5 (Version 12) process. It works fine like this, but some of our clients are making quite extensive use of AEP and it would be good to know if there is process.

Short answer is no. Longer answer is that it would not make sense as

- In many if not most cases you will want to adjust to use one of the new OLAP connection methods.

- processes that specify V4 will still work using d/EPM 12

- V5 introduced some new function overloads - some of which may be mandatory

- a small number of functions are deprecated.

- it makes sense to see if there is scope for performance optimisation with v12 in mind.

I would add to John's reply that the performance of OLAPCellReads and OLAPCellWrites has significantly degraded in v12 is due to the new API for Application Engine using XMLA connection to the database. Consider using OLAPDataArea to read data in bulk, DoubleDictionary for storing and accumulating results and OLAPCellWriteBuffer for writing back results in bulk.

The point is that some intensive processes should be optimised for performance when upgrading to v12.

Hi Peter,

it’s interesting you mention the use of cellwritebuffer; this feature currently exists in v11 and something that we use very frequently. It’s a shame we don’t have a simple way to bulk import AEP scripts from v11 to v12.

Why would we use a double dictionary to store the data if the buffer already stores and writes when it reaches a specific number? Has the buffer feature changed from v11 in v12?

So the double dictionary in conjunction with OLAPDataArea is useful in removing OLAPCellReadNumber operations. It is going depend how intensive your process is but if you are doing a lot of cell reads, the performance will be slow in comparison and very slow compared to v11. Treat DoubleDictionary as your own slice of the OLAP database in memory.

OLAPCellWriteBuffer is good once you want to write your results back to the OLAP database. Essentially it accumulates the writes into one operation (depending on the the number of writes). There is a massive performance increase particularly in v12 if the process needs to do a lot of writes.

My test results I did a few years ago indicates that v12 is 42 times slower for reads and 70 times slower for writes compared to v11 so the above techniques can have a huge impact on performance.
