Calculate variance using a Slice

Hi All! Question on Slices...again. I am trying to create a trial balance report that calculates the change in balances between two periods ( 2020 06_YTD and 2020 12_YTD for example). I am using global variables to select the two periods. How can I calculate the difference between the two periods within the Slice? I tried creating a calculated element, but doesn't seem to work with the two global variables. Any suggestions? Thank you in advance!

Hi Kasey,

I am assuming your period slice is in your columns, when you place the columns on the grid of the report, you can edit the slice hyperblock to change the location of your columns - then you can simply do a sum within the hyperblock to take the values away from each other.

If your periods are contiguous, instead of trying to calculate in the slice - why not create a MTD hierarchy in your period dimension, so that it does the calculation as a natural rollup?

I am using a global variable to identify the period and it is in the columns. When you say "change the location of your columns" do you mean that I can specify the location of each column segment? How do I do that?

I am assuming you have a GV for each period you want to use. When you drag your slice onto the grid, expand the shape of the hyperblock so you have plenty of additional columns to use for your hyperblock. Then modify the hyperblock parameters to place the cells of the hyperblock into different cells. You then simply write formulas to calculate the variances. I'll try and make a screenshot of a customer i did this for - its quite easy - just needs careful manipulation of the hyperblock / parameters to ensure that the data is split.
