Training path for a CSI Developer

Hi all,

I come from Syteline 8 and I was always developing using the EXTGEN sp but now that I am on CSI 9.01.11 (on-prem), I want to be able to start using the new programing methods (extension class, AES, etc.) to be future-proof!.

I saw some courses on Infor Campus like "Extending the Application with Mongoose" or maybe the two "Mongoose: Developing Applications Foundation Part 1 and 2" but these are expensive and I want to be sure that I am on the right track.

What kind of training path are you recommending for a developer like me?

Two options:

Start with Infor Mongoose: How To - IDO Extension Classes - YouTube and see if you can get what you need out of that video and/or similar videos under the InforMarketing10 channel
Talk to your Infor Partner about scheduling a training session with you

Campus classes do not exist that can get this deep into the development stack. They are intended to cover what power users are capable of doing, with little to no programming experience. Once you get to this level, you have to be pretty knowledgeable of .NET development methods, including C# and working with Visual Studio. There is not a direct migration path from T-SQL knowledge to .NET knowledge, it is a completely different skill set and different way of working with data.

That's not to discourage you from trying - we (The Mongoose Community) have helped many people out in your position and they have been able to muddle their way through it, but it is a steep curve. It is also easier to do over a Zoom call with visual examples vs trying to teach it through discussion posts.

I agree with Tim 100%. For me, the key was access to visual examples of C#.

You can also check out the Infor Applied Innovation YouTube channel for more resources, there are a good bit of Mongoose related videos on there as well.

I watched some of the videos on YouTube and these are a great start and there also seem to have a lot of stuff on the Mongoose Portal.

For Visual Studio, which version do I need? is the Pro version enough and for the script editor in CSI, it says 2015 or 2017?

@Tim: What about a more specific training like "Using the Application Event System" available on Campus? Also, our Infor Partner does not use the extension classes so I am wondering if you would be able to do a walkthrough using Zoom to discuss the possibilities and get me started.

You should use the latest Community version of Visual Studio. If you want to use the Pro version, that is fine, but not required. IDO Extension Classes would be built with the Class Library (.NET Framework) project in either VB or C#, though C# is recommended.

You will also want to Favorite and review KB2146483 in the support portal. That contains the Mongoose SDK with the source code for the latest release of CSI (an prior versions as well). The SDK will provide you with examples of how Infor codes their classes, in both C# and VB.

If you want to learn AES, the Campus class is a good starting point, but the examples are limited. Once you get into real world scenarios, you will quickly run into "how do I do X?" questions.

If your Partner doesn't do IDO Extension Classes, you need a new partner. All Infor Partners are required to know and use IDO Extension Classes and to apply Infor extensibility best practices.
