Application Studio: How to automatically show some elements of a given dimension and hide some other

Hello All

We have a Hierarchical chart of accounts.

Upon execution of the Application Studio reports that we are setting up, we would like the report to automatically display some detail (children accounts) on some given lines, and hide it on other lines (no need to display children elements on these)

Moreover, the detail we would like to be automatically displayed varies from line to line, i.e, it belongs to different Hierarchical levels of the dimension “Account”.

We are trying to replicate on App Studio the reports the customer sent us on Excel. As far as possible, we would like the report on App Studio to emulate exactly the same level of detail we were given, only on the lines where such detail should exist.

Of course, the aim is to avoid setting up as many partial hyperblocks as the specific cases the customer sent us…

Is this possible?

If the report should not allow the user to drill by say hitting a + indicator then you can have a selection like this

If the user should be able to change the selections then multiple hyperblocks would be the easiest option so that you can specify the 'begin expansion' level per hyperblock.

What I usually do is, I create an attribute in the account dimension, e.g. "ReportLevel". This would be a numeric attribute. Then I'll use 1 for all accounts that should be shown as base-level accounts in the report (normal font), and 2 for accounts on level 2 (e.g., bold print), and 3 on the next level up (e.g., bold and underlined), and 4 on top level (e.g., bold white print on dark grey background).

Then I define the hyperblock as all accounts where this number is not 0. I'll set the order by an order attribute. And I'll use conditional formats to format the row header and numbers.

This will give the user the flexibility to change the content and format of all the reports by just changing the accounts.

As John mentions, this will not let you drill down or roll up in this type of reports, this is a static "presentation" report. If you want to be able to drill down and roll up, you can always create a drill-across report with a jump-to action in the presentation report, with all the flexibility. This will be a "working" report. It won't look so nice, it has no pre-defined format but it will let you analyze all the details.

The other option is using multiple hyperblocks. The down side is that you may have to change the design of every single report when you want to add or change something in the presentation structure, or the account hierarchy.

Actually, the drill-down option you refer to should still apply to the reports. I realize now I didn't mention it before. So I guess there's no escaping the multi-hyperblock solution, or the attributes Martin kindly suggested

Hello Martin, and thanks for your suggestions on this matter and your complete and detailed answer.

I Think we will go with the attribute (to define weather or not a given account should be automatically displayed) + the Jump-to Action, (in order to keep the drill-down capabilities). We will definitely propose this to the customer and follow from that.
