Development Requests/Documentation of Changes

Hello everyone,

We are getting ready to ramp up our development team from a team of 1 to a team of many and I wanted to see if anyone had and forms/checklists that they would be willing to share that they use today for tracking the changes made through development. Either an excel spreadsheet or word doc that is used to track the component, event or form script changes in case you every have to back back and redo the mods or if you need to check other developers work before moving to production what is your process for validation? So far I have been the only developer and I know what changes I've made and just screenshot for future reference.

Is it easier to view another developers form changes reviewing the XML files with WinMerge or visually review through winstudio/csi?

Any advice with anyone with a team of developers would be greatly appreciated

Hello,

we are using Subversion on an local machine to see which user has changed something an when.

You have to check Out Forms or IDO's so one is only working on one thing and need to check-in when the work is done.

We're exporting the sql Files and XML Files for each development step with time stamp so that we can roll back a previous Version.

In the svn itself the sql and xml Files are also stored as an revision..

Thank you I will look into Subversion. So are the form mods still done within mongoose, you jsut require the developers to check out the form they want to make changes to in subversion before they start?

You can try GITHUB for version control to track all the changes between your team. It is another flavor of SVN. GITHUB does have a cloud service option if you team grows larger.

You may want to check out versioning software like Azure DevOps (which is free for up to 5 people, by the way.) This commits your changes to the server and records the changes and who commits them. This way everyone can see what's going on. There is also issue boards built in, you can link development commits to those incidents and even use email notifications. We are a team of 2 and we use that software daily to track everything. Its a lifesaver!

Would the Community here find it helpful if there was an example of:
1. how to call an Infor Cloud tenant to pull out content that has been developed then check it into a Github repository

2. how to check out content from Github and send it to an Infor Cloud tentant

By "content" I mean extensions, workflows, configurations that have been user developed and need to be migrated from DEV->TEST->PROD in a typical fashion. This kind of example could be used to create automated CI/CD pipelines to manage content changes using a source code repository / control system.

This only works for ION Desk changes.

I have/had several developers working on Workflows, Data Flows and Scripts for different projects. I wrote this to let me know when something changed and keep a version of the code downloaded in case something went wrong after a change. I write this to a Git managed folder, and check in the updates and reports.

This is a PowerShell script I wrote for myself for backing up all ION Desk elements that had APIs available. I’ve asked Infor for APIs for the other elements, so I’m hoping we’ll get more soon.

Purpose:

Backup all ION Desk elements possible nightly
Track changes, and notify me if anyone changes any tracked element

Caveats:

Not all ION Desk Items have APIs
Schema backups are optional, set as variable in PowerShell Script
Power Automate is used to send emails
Requires PowerShell 6+
Scheduled in Windows Scheduler to run nightly
Requires an IONAPI file for Tenant, setup as Background Service to be in the same directory as the PowerShell script
Backups are in Infor JSON format instead of the XML format used by the UI
- I’ve asked Infor to make the XML format available via API
- This means if you have to restore a backup, you have to use the API to restore
  - I’ve only had to do this a few times, so I haven’t written a restore script, I just use the IONAPI Swagger page

Note, I’m not a PowerShell expert, and this may not be the cleanest code, but it works for me. I schedule this process to run every night at 0100 to pull any changes and report them.

A report email is generated when changes are detected. Changes are highlighted in red for that report only. Also tracks deletes, and marks them red in the report the delete is detected in.

Power Automate I use:

To run, execute the PowerShell script, the parameter being the name of the IONAPI file without the extension:

Console Output during execution. Versions that match are marked Not Saved, as we already have a backup.

When completed, it will create a report HTML file for the backup. An HTML file is only generated when changes are detected. This allows the Power Automate to only look for new HTML files to send the email.

For H5 Script Development for M3, I use Git and Visual Studio Code. I write my code in TypeScript, and use TSC and some Infor reference libraries for the Scripts. Git merging is fairly painless unless two developers edit the same function at the same time. The Visual Studio Code UI allows me to track when files have been Added or Modified, see (1) and (2) in the screenshot below. For Multi-Tenant development, I use a split terminal, the pane on the left running NodeMon and the pane on the right is where I run my build scripts. I roll my TypeScript output into single files for M3 via Browserify. I use a similar setup for XTendM3 development as well, using Maven and Git in that case.

In the VSC UI, I can track any changes to the source and review for making notes to share before commit. Deleted sections are in red, changed or added in green.

If you have several team members that may be working on the same module at the same time, I recommend a full merge tool like GitHub Desktop (Free) or Git Kraken (Paid). Personally, I’ve used both, and I like Git Kraken’s UI a little better, but that’s a matter of option, not facts.

One other thing I’ve started doing in writing my specs and documentation in MarkDown. It can be saved in Version Control because it’s text, and can easily be rendered into HTML, Word, or PDF formats for sharing with the business teams. If you write lots of documentation, MarkDown Monster (Paid) is a good tool too. You write on the left panel, and see the rendered output on the right.
